Dad might be buying a nytro ? Help please new to yamaha

So my dads thinking of buying a nytro as everyone knows yamaha has been around forever and makes good stuff and there 4stroke sleds are "bulletproof" he has thought about one before but we have always rode 2 stroke sleds and i have grown up around polaris and cat. Hes thinking a nytro for his next sled. He doesnt want to sink alot of money into it but would like to loose some weight and do the free and basic type mods. So like i said just looking for some insight as were new to the 4strokes and these sleds and would be looking to loose some weight. Is $5000 or less a good deal for 08 nytro ? From my bit of reading they trench a bit. Ive heard you can solve this buy m1000 skid and ive seen lots of guys do this for a weight savings to. So my question is the m1000 skid a direct bolt in or how much work/modding is required ? Also how much weight does it usually drop ? Other then that what we were thinking was cut the seat in half make it smaller take out foam loose some weight there vent the hood. What else could we do ? He wouldnt want to spend alot say if his budget was $1000 what else other then what i mentioned could he do for power/weight saving upgrades list them in the order you would do them. Most of all were looking at cheap weighs to loose a good amount of weight. Also anything else you can tell me about these sleds would be great. Also i hear the tracks are bad on the 08s and stuff we would look at upgrading to a ce 2.5 or powerclaw and then port it. Thanks again guys. :face-icon-small-win

Edit: Also forget lightweight battery and remove sway bar if these sleds have one. Is there much weight to save in the exhaust or intake on these sled ? Wheres the airbox located ? Can you run some piping out of the airbox to a airfilter out of the hood for a cold air intake ?

There are a bunch of threads on here about how to make the 08's work well. In short, here is a list of things I would do starting with the most important IMO:

Track
Skid
rollover valve/tether
stiffen subframe
lighter battery
Shocks
A-arms
Remove foam from side pannels (can soak up melted snow, adding weight during the day)


The list goes on and on and on...but honestly with nothing more than a track/skid swap I went from a hate/hate relationship to a love/love relationship with my sled! If it stays stock for awhile, suck the limiter straps up tight on the skid. This will keep it from trenching as much, but will give you more ski pressure.

timbersled makes a skid ..that bolts in

replace the track first !!yamaha must have gotten a discount on there tracks as they suck.....just look at the tracks that come with the other mountain sleds more agressive deeper lugs ...

on the stock skid drop it down to the bottom hole on the rear drop bracket

i dont ever remember mine trenching but it had a turbo from day one ..

the stock track got me stuck allot..put a challenger extreme 2.5 on and it made the sled awesome ...

a turbo will make the weight disappear

i have a 2011 for sale with a push turbo 600 miles 10k has allot of mods
 
I think you'd be better off to buy a 2010. The suspension is better, they are a "little" bit lighter. That way you can just ride it and not have to mess with it. And I'm sure you can find a new or slightly used one for less money. I liked my 09', but stuck a lot of money into it. Loved the four stroke torque. And if you're not into big hills, the Nytro does just fine in the mountains. The power is very addicting and a lot of fun to ride. Just keep in perspective that it's not a Pro, PC or XP.

Track change is a must, unless you ride in dry powder all the time. The Mav does fine in the soft dry stuff, everywhere else it is less positive. My preference is a Challenger from the M series Cat. The Nytro is not a good trail sled, IMO. No wind protection and darn squirrely in stock form. $5000 may be a bit high for an 08. Depends on where you live. I would wait it out a bit. He may have more of an upgrade budget if he does. Overall I like my Nytro for the riding I am doing.

I dont know the market of the nytros or yamahas for that fact as i dont watch them alot, i think we will wait but he seems to want to try a four stroke. Only thing im worried about is he doesnt want to throw alot at it, as for him bieng big hes 215lbs with alot of muscle and thats without his backpack or riding gear, so probably 225lbs+ with everything on. Also we dont really care about trails we usually dont ride them for more then 15 mins and cats arnt good on trails either so it would be a change plus were buying "mountain" sleds for a reason. So considering he got say a 2009-10 other then a track upgrade what would be next ? Really looking for some way to loose some weight for cheap or free. My first things are port the track maybe,do some venting,take the headlights out (will these sleds burn down with out the lights drawing power ? Some cats need that power drawn or else the ecu burns down) take off the sway bar if there is one,light weight battery, exhaust maybe ?,cut up his stock seat smaller or go aftermarket, what else ?? Like i said he wouldn't want to spend alot of money and can these climb pretty good in stock power form ??

Also for maintenance whats required ? I know these sleds dont take oil like a 2 stroke correct ? Im assuming these sleds have a chaincase or ?? Sorry guys rookie to yamis and 4-strokes.

On the 08's they have really weak front subframes. You need to check to see if it has been updated or if it is bent. The easiest way to tell is to look at the front shocks to see if they are centered in the top A-arm. The easist way to tell if it has a updated front subframe is look below the the mounts for the lower a-arm. if there is a flat plate welded between the two lower tubes with a circle cut in the middle it has a updated clip. Still weak though. Oil Tank is also weak. over time with laying the sled over it will crack and leak. OFT sells a pretty nice aftermarket one that fixes the issue.

here is a list of common mods:

swap Track - powerclaw or camoplast
OFT steering relocater- moves bars up to a more natural position
OFT roll-over valve and tether- Must have
Rear Skid- Kmod or Timbersled - +30 lbs weight saving
Front end-Skinz concept or timbersled - +8 lbs weight saving
Exhaust- Excell +8 hp - 7lbs. Need to run fuel controller with any exhaust
Ulmer Racing - K&N air cleaner Kit
Chutch kit- Hartman inc. OFT Racing ,Ulmer Racing
Lightweight battery - ballistic or antigravity
remove parking brake - run MPI weightless parking brake
Running boards - better boards or Skinz air frame there are others
Skies- simmons gen III Slydog powder hounds SLP powder pros
vent kit- the can run hot
Front bumper- Timbersled, skinz, stock provides little protection.
Rear Bumper- skinz provides a more portection for the rear tunnel


Boost- supercharger turbo

I agree with motojunkie the track and skid will make the biggest difference. The list can go on and on.

$5-$6 grand is a good range for an 08. It depends on where it is and what mods have been down. By now there are not too many 08's in stock form because so many people have tried to improve them. Buying a newer one means that you get some of the mods already done for you that you would have to normally do yourself to make the 08 better. 08's are good sleds but they can certainly be better with a few mods.

If you go 2010 they dont have a sway bar becasue they went to the fox float shock package to save weight. There are not a lot of cheap ways to save on weight You can save a bunch of weight but it will cost you. That is one of the biggest gripes about the Nytro. To get the weight down you need to spend some money. If you spend it right you can get the wieght down alot and improve the sled a bunch in the process. skinz has a lightweight seat exhaust combo but again it is pricey. After the track swap i would look into the Skinz new front end. Z-bros racing also has a kit out there that improves the geometry of the front end whcih in turn improve how the sled handles.

they climb pretty well with a track swap. But remember these sled are not 800 class sleds so in stock form the wont climb as good a stock 800. they are down +10 Hp and about +50lbs heavier then a stock 800. I would not port the track at all. these sled weight more and you need all the floatation you can get.

maintenance is similar to any sled but you dont have to fog the cylindes to summerize it. Some people still do. They do have chain case which has very little oil in it. I change it every season. they have zerk fitting that you have to grease on a regular basis. You do have to change the oil on a regualr basis similar to a car.

Thanks good amount of info there. So ya they dont have oil you fill like a 2stroke. They have like oil filters and such. My dad has always liked yami and the idea of 4-strokes and reliablility but i dont think hes going to want to drop this much into a sled to save all the weight i think i might just tell him to ethier plan to spend some money on mods or just go with a m8 or m1000. Thanks guys for you help it seems like with these sleds you leave them low hp heavy and reliable or just go all out

It is night and day difference by just putting a track on it. I know of a few used ones around here for $300. There is a lot of guys out there that want the lightest sled on the hill. Those guys will never be happy because there will always be a newer lighter something.

There are guys like me that just want all the benefits of a 4 stroke and to have fun without worrying about getting back to the trailer for many years to come. If the sled is a good deal buy it, put a track on it, and ride it. Mods are endless if you allow them to be. :rockon:

Whats the best way to get a bit more power out of these sleds without spending alot ? Also how are these sleds for sidehilling and boondocking ?

I agree with this post 100%. I went with a Yamaha 4 stroke because I don't believe that a top end rebuild at 1500 miles should be considered "preventative maintenance".

I can't tell you how many people tell me "Just get a 700 two stroke, they are bullet proof", well I have 3 friends whose bullet proof 700's went down recently. The last one was a 2008 700 dragon with only 15-1800 miles on it!

I figure using the money saved from rebuilds and burnt two stroke oil into mods/upgrades, will pay off in the form of a reliable/capable mountain sled. When my sled isn't competitive any more I'll throw a turbo on it and be good to go again! I don't think getting 20k - 30k miles out of one of these motors is unreachable.
 
Ive read over your thread before looks nice. How much weight do you think youve dropped and by spending how much ?

I'm not sure how much weight I've dropped so far but I'm going to find out what it weighs in the near future. I'm betting that all of the foam, plastic, reflective lights, and unnecessary components that I eliminated will add up, but we'll see!

So for maintence you guys just fill up with gas change chaincase oil once a year and then have oil you drain and put new oil filters in just like a car ? How often do you do this ? Anything else you guys do ?

Pretty much! I'm a little more meticulous on my pre-season maintenance than most but those are the basics. I change my oil/filter once a season.
