Had to pull out a brand new 14 cause the so called key thing wouldn't work
any one know how to by-pass it and get rid of that junk

Is there a story here about what happened? There is a lot of smart people on here to help but they need info to do that. I have never seen a dess just not work for no reason.

I was woundering the same thing. I don't mind the set up, but is there any way to disconnect the thing to get it out of somewhere in case it does take a crap?

If your paranoid about it buy a second key. I had 3 keys when i owned my 2001. Never had a issue and i have had 4 Summits since my 01. Its tried and true, but anything can fail !

Have seen these asked on Doo talk a few times. But the few guys that know how to wont share. Which might be a good thing because the Doo's are by far the hardest sled to steal.

The story is, the sled is brand new and the key was acting up so we took it to dealer and they re-flashed it and bought another key for it and it still does it. IT SAYS CHECK KEY. some times if you moved the tether around it would work. we pulled it to the trailer and started it and it was fine.
It would be nice to get rid of it all together, as far as the steeling the thing if someone wants it, there going to take it

I was wondering if any one new how the tether worked, is it a resistance reading so a guy could by-pass it with a resistor or what it would take? They seem to be pretty fool proof but it is still one thing that could wreck a good day of riding, so I personally would rather not have it

any input would be appreciated

garfield I have all my XMs keyed alike and carry a spare. They are finicky about how the key fits on the post or whatever you call it. A little snow in the key will also make it code. So I whip the key into the grip a few times when I pull it out. The other thing that can happen is the guts in the key can be damaged and then they need to be replace. One thing I have noticed is they won't throw a code or work partially if the RPM is up. It is only when they are coming off idle that they won't let the engine run right. So if you are climbing or riding fast the engine won't just cut out. I think it's actually a good tether system but it has some annoying quirks. I would make the dealer sort this out for you, definitely a warranty deal.

Totally agree...the DESS system is a weak link in an otherwise great system. This is my forth SkiDoo with the DESS and I have experience random issues with this system and would prefer and less complex system or a by pass work around.

:typing:

might not be your issue

what some guys don't know is if you get snow built up in your throttle lever and it wont fully go back to the closed position the computer will not let the motor rev just like when the key isn't fully sitting correctly. might not be your problem but its a good thing to know. cheers

Happened to my '13 in the first 45 mi. It's worth a few good 'snaps' of the throttle lever and a warm garage/trailer! ;)

I can delete the dess system out of the ecm so any key will work, or you can wire in a normally closed tether(highly recommended).

problem is I need the whole sled to do so. I might be able to do it if you shipped me the ecm but I would need to find someone with the same sled to plug your ecm into.

I guess I don't get what the snapping throttle thing would do to a message coming across the dash that says check key? but I could see doing that if the engine wouldn't accede 1100 rpms or what it see's on start up. I know if you hold throttle wide open and start it, it will just idle

On the older zx and rev chassis sleds you could swap out the MPEm and dess key with another sleds MPEm and key. The key is programmed to the MPEm.

I've seen this used on a sled that wouldn't start that was down in a hole. they had another sled same model swapped parts, got the sled out of the hole and towed it back to the truck.

I'm pretty shure the only way to delete the dess all together would require the ski doo race department to reprogram the MPEm.
