Been to the top of the world once out of Cooke City and need specific areas to ride to get the most out of our day. We have been to the end before but would like an area closer to Cooke City to turn north. We have gone up by the rangers station and need more ideas for good back country riding. Please help. Thanks!!

I am also curious if you can ride from the pilot creek parking lot to top of the world. The last time I was there we had to trailer a few miles because of lack of snow. Sorry 63 I have only been there once myself.

Better get a good map, the wilderness boundary limits you in some areas up there.

There is a lot of area to cover up there and alot of good riding, but it would be best to hook up with someone who knows the area for your first time up. The area is more open than up above town, but is more secluded and remember that help is a lot farther away if you have trouble. I would suggest trying to get ahold of someone from the club out of Cody, WY. That is really their area, kind of like their back yard. Their club has a web site and they are the ones who maintain the warming hut/ safety shelter at the top.

There is a back trail out of the Pilot parking area to the Beartooth. It is now groomed, thanks to the last snows. The trail exiting from the parking lot has changed, but is in the same vicinity and well marked. Be careful, there is a logging operation going on. Make sure you are on the trail and not the plowed logging road.
The trails are now marked in the Beartooths, again thanks for the snow. Maps are available at the Safety Shelter. Please sign the guest book when you visit the facility.
There is a 911 phone available at the Safety Shelter in case you need it. Carry spare gas if you travel over from Cooke.
You must also display a Wyoming registration. They are available in Cooke,Cody and at the Painter Store(6.2 miles back from 212 Jct.).
If you run into anyone from the "Cody club" on the hill, they will try to help you out.

Rode the trail two weeks ago from Pilot parking area to the beartooth parking area. At that time is was rough but doable. Sounds like a groomer made it thru there since then. The Safety shelter is a nice touch(don't foreget to throw them a couple bones in the donation collection box)! Top of the world was my favorite experience of the trip to Cooke City. The club does a great job up there...thanks!

We'll be in Cooke next week. We are thinking of doing one day at TOW, bringing our strapped 5's from Cooke. The lowest elevation I can find on Topo says 6900 ft. Is that true, just confirming? I noticed the new trail layout, thanks for grooming!

Riding the Top of the World

Morning to everyone. This is Bob from Bearclaw bob's.
The riding at the TOP is getting better by the day. The trail finally got groomed last weekend. So its alot better then it had been.

If your staying in Cooke, stop by and I'll give anyone pointers about the area and also a map. Have a safe trip out.

I also sell permits for Montana and Wyoming.

Personally rode the area last week. The snow was DEEP and endless. We stayed at bob's and parked in the lot so we topped off with fuel on the way out and back. What a great area too ride. It has Way less traffic than cooke and the riding is fantastic. Granted the snow was the best I have ever experienced in the area but I spent the majority of the day helping newbies with their stucks. Man was the snow good and all the land mines are buried. I don't see why, with the new snow they are receiving, the riding won't be epic. GOOOD LUCK and be SAFE.

Looks like nothing but rocks and stumps on the Beartooths, please stay home.

No He's not serious... Was all over the Beartooths last weekend (sat - Mon) and it Actually QUITE good... Make sure you find places where the snow has drifted (and therefore built up nicely) - if you take hwy 212 Top of World) to the end of the grooming and go right - its pretty good... just keep going deeper to find the untracked... I'm sure there's a lot more good than just this - But 9 of us last week were plenty happy here - never hit another track... no rocks or stumps either.

Cheers

Not serious. Snowing in the Beartooth.
Rode there yesterday, you have to make your own stumps.:face-icon-small-hap. Can't help you with the rocks, mother nature did.

Just got home from Cooke. Rode Top of the World Tuesday thru Friday and it was a blast. Snowed all day Friday and didn't hardly see another track. Played in the trees, plenty of fun, and a few stucks. But yeah, pack gas, have a map and at least a compass, if not a gps. Very easy to get turned around. Have a good time.
