Changing your Chain Case Oil on the Gen 5 Summit Sleds

Great video, and a reminder that its time to do mine! Thanks, Dave!

What is the recommended service limit on one of these chains ? At what point would you recommend changing the chain, and at what intervals should the chain case be opened and chain gears visually be inspected, I know there’s away to measure between a certain amount of pins but I can’t seam to find that information. It’s in one of my manuals but not sure what one it’s in

Brp should be recalling the chain and gears on these 23’s with the amount of failures so far. Would like to see an update like the tki gear retainer also.

You know the amount of failures? What are the numbers? Would like to hear how many summits were made to how many chain failures they have had.

In the group of 5 that i ride with all of us have g5’s and two of them are making metal in the chaincase, not just a bit of metal either. Local dealer said that more are starting to come in with chain issues also. Im also interested to know what the failure rate is.

Takes 15.5 oz or 460 ish mils
350 ml is just under 12 ounces, which is what it says on page 268 in the manual:

Chaincase oil
Capacity

XPS Synthetic chaincase oil

75W140 gear oil

that meets the API GL-5 specification

350 ml (12 fl oz(US))

I have 4 G5 in group and not one guy has complained about chain case noise or anything. With 600km on it I am tightening it less. Good or bad I have no idea but it’s working. Until I see actual failure rate numbers or mine explodes on the hill i suppose, I will let the sled keep chewing up that snow.

So I did some research here and on any chain if you measure between 2 pins and get the distance then measure between 12 links if there’s a 3% gain over this distance the chain is at its service limit.
Called around to some dealers today the say oil change after break in then visual inspection at 1000 kms and tighten chain at 1000 km intervals.
