Candaian resident buying a U.S sled?

Hey im going to be buying a sled from utah here this month and was wondering if I being a canadian resident can ride thier ith insurance before i bring back to canada? and for paperwork I need the recall note and a copy of current registration correct? please give me any info thats helpful, thanks very much

Its a giant pain in the *** to be truthful, jump through all the government hoops and there a profit not much though. You have to contact the US boarder where your gonna cross back into Canada, 72 hrs in advance! Request the proper export form, fill it out and return back to them. That's when the clock starts. You need to search the government site, search under- exporting a vehicle.
Also need: Recall form-Company stating all recalls have been done.
-Bill of sale
-If the sleds used, a copy of the add, dont have MAKE ONE. Its saves time on the CDN side.

Canadian side needs a bill of sale, and the stamped export form. They will also require CASH for the tax.

Keep all your paperwork, then theres a few more hurdles to register it, oh and some more CASH!

Easy enough, clear as mud!
 
Do you know f it would be a problem for me to ride down there while picking it up for a few days without binging it back to Canada and registering in my name first?
 
I'm not an expert on this but...

You need to check with them but I don't think it'll matter what ya do with it down there. Just as long as you give them(US Customs) the notice and paperwork they require.

As far as registration goes, your on your own. I don't know. I might think that paying for the sled, riding it there, purchase a trail pass or whatever system they use might get ya by. Then just treat it as your sled Unregistered and ride it. Then deal with the boarder.
 
I just bought a sled from Minnesota. If you have all the right paperwork its real easy actually.
You will need to get the ORIGINAL title from the owner. This is needed because when you cross the border, the US side will stamp it so the Canadian side will know everything is legit and it can be allowed into the country. You need to fax this info to the US border crossing no later than 72 hours before you cross so that they have time to make sure nothing is stolen.
You will need a recall clearance letter from the manufacturer as well. This is needed by the RIV so that you will be able to get it registered.
Bill of sale will also be needed so that the Canadian side will know how much taxes to charge.
If you are getting the sled shipped, you will need a broker to fix up all of the import paperwork for you since you will not be there to do it yourself.

So:

Step 1: Fax the title to the US border crossing you will be using at least 72 hours before you plan to cross.

Step 2: When you have the sled in your posession with a bill of sale, and the ORIGINAL title, you can cross the border. Check in at the US side and they will stamp the title. Then check in at the Canadian side and fill out all of the import paperwork and pay the GST (it was 5% for me). When this is all done, RIV will be informed that the sled has entered the country. (RIV is the organization that keeps track of all of the vehicles entering the country) If all of this checks out, you can continue on your merry way for now.

Step 3: You have 10 days after the sled has crossed the border to pay the RIV import fee which is almost like 200 bucks. You will get a letter in the mail with a case number on it. You dont have to wait for this letter, you can call them right away and they can just use your name to track you case. Pay the fee and answer all the questions and if everything is satisfactory, they will send you an inspection form that has to be filled out.

Step 4: You have 45 days after the sled has crossed the border to get the inspection form filled out. You can just take the sled to Canadian Tire or any authorized inspector to get it inspected and they will put a stamp on it.

Step 5: Send the filled out inspection form, and a copy of the recall clearance letter back to RIV and then they will send you a compliance sticker in the mail that you can put on the sled.

Step 6: Bring all of your paperwork: (Bill of sale, import papers, recall clearance letter, title, and filled out inspection form) to motor vehicle registration and pay the rest of the taxes and fees to get it registered.

This sounds like a lot but as long as you have all the right paperwork, it should move pretty quickly.

Most states don't title sleds, so you may be sol on importing it, better check that out. Utah does not title them either I believe, based on the last sled I bought in UT.
Typically unless you go to a very popular spot to ride in the mtns there will be noone to check the sled registration anyway. I don't think I've had mine checked more than twice in alot of years once it was at a popular spot in CO where you had to buy a daily trail pass so they checked all sleds and once here in WA, some volunteer registration checker.
 
well we are riding in cooke city,i wana make sure i have insurance on the sled will i have to bring back to canada and register here before i take to ride so i have insurance?

Either Title( has to be the original) or the registration if that state does not have titles.

Bill of Sale- even better if the seller has it notarised....just helps make things easier on Canadian side especially if it is a good deal.

Copy of the ad....if it's off a forum- copy the whole ad/thread - you want to show everything including price reductions /history.

Make sure the serial # is completely readable....

-Not sure what brand it is that you are buying but if it is a Polaris( or any other brand for that matter)...make sure you have the SSCC certification/compliance stickers on the tunnel. Polaris will not issue you a letter of compliance (which is required to import into Canada if the stickers are missing) - they will tell you it is the compliance letter but send you a recall letter. THEY WILL NOT ISSUE A COMPLIANCE LETTER!!!!!( and they will not refund your money that they charged you!!!) -without it you can not import.

Don't try B.S. about the selling price - it is not worth it...pay the taxes!!!!

Have a copy of the payment slip/withdrawal- again not necessary but just something to help make things go smoother....

If you talk to someone at either border- ask for their name and badge # - this can really help if something goes south!!!

RIV is awesome to deal with - phone them and talk to them also.

Correction MOST states issue titles for sleds. If you did not get one I would seriously worry whether it is stolen.
You can register most sleds with out of state registrations with just the VIN.
You should also be able to insure a sled with just the VIN. (Vehicle Identification Number)
Let them know you just bought and will provide a title as soon as it is in your name.

I have imported a few sleds in my time. I have *ALWAYS* provided a title at the border. They don't need it in your name.

Here's the steps I took to get it done:

How to import a snowmobile:

1. Get the owner to fax you a copy of their registration/title/certificate of origin and bill of sale. Fax that to the border no less than 72 hours before you plan to take it across. You want to make sure the sled has no liens on it prior to doing this.

2. Phone the manufacturer of sled you're buying and get them to give you a recall clearance letter. You will need to supply the VIN, and possibly the bill of sale. They will check to see if all recalls were done. If they are not done get the owner of the sled to do them, they are free for them usually. DO NOT buy a sled if all recalls are not done, you may not be able to get them done free in Canada. Ideally, get the current owner to have them done in the US. Once the owner gets them done, phone the manufacturer again and get them to give you an updated clearance letter.

3. When you come back across, stop at the US side and go inside the public entrance. Ask for an officer to check the sled out and make sure the VIN is there and they will stamp the title/certificate of origin/registration. They typically don’t even look at the sled, just the paperwork you provide.

4. Take the title/certificate of origin/registration and bill of sale along with any other proof of purchase you have to the CDN side. They will get you to pull over and go inside.

5. Go inside and pay GST on the purchase price. You will need the title/certificate of origin/registration and bill of sale, the date of manufacture (off the side of the tunnel) and whatever other proof you have of the sale price. They give you a Form 1 and they fill it out. They fax a copy of it to RIV. You have 45 days to get the sled approved for import from this time on.

5. Pay the RIV fee @ www.riv.ca ($205) as soon as you get home.

6. Fax the recall clearance to RIV with your reference # from your form 1 and your online payment reference #.

7. Phone RIV 48 hours later and give them your case number which will be in red at the top of your Form 1. Get them to confirm that they have the copy of the Form 1 sent from the border, the payment you made and the recall clearance. They will mail you a Form 2 or you can get them to email it to you. Email is much faster but dealing with them is like pulling teeth.

8. Take the Form 2 to Canadian Tire or any other approved outlet. At the Auto Service desk, tell them you have a sled you need them to fill the Form 2 out for. They verify the VIN and model number. Then they get you to start the sled to make sure the kill switch works and check for reflectors/headlight/taillight.

9. Go and register the sled with your completed Form 1, Form 2, bill of sale and title. You pay the PST and you're done.

Having a problem right now about a polaris sled with no sscc sticker. Apparently it can be done.

Never stopped at US side ... 4 sleds plus a quad plus a SUV in two separate trips across. Canadian side is interested in $ - gst at the border, RIV fee and pst when you register in province.

Paperwork - Bill of Sale / Transfer + clearance / recall letter for CBS - they didn't even leave the comfy building to verify the sled info - Ser # / brand / year / etc. Unless you plan on bringing the sled back into US to ride or have serviced then carry on across and stop on Cdn side only.

Commercial shippers different story - follow rules exactly!
 
great great thread...its going to be a huge help when i pick up my brand new CMX sled..

ok,next question...anybody gonna give me the money for the new sled...??
