At what age can you ride the trails in Montana/Wyoming?

Just wondering how old my son has to be to ride the trails in Montana or Wyoming?

He is 10 yrs old and has been riding sleds and 4-wheelers since he was 5, but just on the farm here in Ontario,Canada. Heading out to West Yellowstone next weekend and would like to let him ride his own sled. Last year we were out there and I let him play in the meadows while we had lunch, but we rode out of town 2-up. It would be nice to let him have his own ride.

Any info from other fathers in the same situation would help.

Thanks.

I don't think there is an age limit in Montana. My son started in the mid 90's at 10 and it was legal for him to ride back then. It may have changed in the last few years, I will try to find out for sure and get back if someone doesn't.

If no one comes up with the magic number tonight...just call one of the rental operations out there.

They will surely have the info.

I thought that there was an age limit, which was much lower if the child had taken and completed an approved safety course. I don't know if that changes by area in the state. I'll see if I can find out more info.

Edit: Waiting on a phone call back. Will post what I find out when I get that call. :)

when i was younger there wasnt really an age limit to ride the trails in the places i went but road crossings we were told just have somebody drive my sled across and nobody would hassle us.. this wasnt in montana this was in south dakota

On Forest Service land their is no age limit. Around town your suppose to have a license or go thru the snowmobile saftey course. I will tell you my kids are all 10 (triplets) and they all ride their own machines and we have for a couple years and have never had any issues. We do try to stay off the main roads mainly for saftey sake.

Ok....you still might want to check with West Yellowstone. They may have more rules in place there.

As long as there an adult with, it is ok. Ultimately the adult is responsible for their child (which is as it should be in life...we need to be parents). The child is expected to follow all of the regular rules we do. If there is reckless driving, riding where not allowed, being a safety issue for others, etc.... that would be a problem.

I got my info from our local Forest Service. They checked with the Wardens at Fish, Wildlfe, Parks. The FS Rangers weren't in the office at the time, so as soon as contact is made with them, they will let me know if there is anything different (I have their cell numbers, but they are out of service coverage right now).

Hope this helps out! :)

Thanks for the info. I looked into the online safety course but it will not work for someone from Canada. It also looks like it is only needed for riding on trails that follow plowed roads. Plan on staying on the trails and forest lands.

All the response was great. I know my son will have a lot more fun this year since he won't have to ride 2-up with his old man!:face-icon-small-hap
