Air cooled Snowmobile engine oil.

I figured I would post this here cause y'all are riding self engineered sleds. Most likely know more than the average Joe.

The old manuals for my sleds say to use TCW-3 oil (97 IndyTrail and 96 Lite). I've read quite a bit about oils and so I just purchased a gallon of Husky chainsaw oil that is JASO-FD certified. I can get TCW-3 way cheaper.

Do you think that I'm better off with the FD, or should I just save my money and fly with TCW-3.

Wow. I know that "good oil" for one application is not necessarily good oil for another. My 488 fanner has gone 7,000+ miles so far on Walmart TCW-3, but I don't push it too hard because I'm no longer enamored with tearing down engines every year. I wouldn't mind just throwing caution to the wind once in a while.

The TCW-3 oil is designed for water cooled outboard boat engines. That oil is designed for an engine that runs much colder than either an air or liquid cooled snowmobile engine. The jaso rated oil is the better choice for a snowmobile. That doesn't mean a failure will happen with tcw-3 but, the margin of safety is most likely better with the jaso, or a TC rated (hard to find ) oil.

I run Phillips 66 injex oil in my 1999 polaris 340 and 2007 polaris 550 fanners so far so good. Probably ran 750 miles on the 340 and 500 miles on the 550 with this oil.

I thought I was buying it for under $30 a gallon here locally from an actual oil distributor but could be wrong online price is showing a higher. There is also an Injex Pro but I don't think it meets the JASO requirement which seems funny because you would think the "pro" version that is synthetic based would be better than the plain version. Not really sure why that is but the plain Injex meets JASO requirements while the "pro" doesn't say anything about JASO requirements.

Noticed you referred to JASO-FD, and Phillips 66 Injex is JASO-FB. Wondered what the difference was between FB And FD and this is what I found.
