Aftermarket Y-Pipe Worth It?

Seasons over and I'm already looking for some inexpensive things to do to my sled. Sleds a '13 Proclimb 800. I've done a few things over the past couple years. Updated skis, MDS clutching, 20/49 gearing etc. I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket y-pipe like a bmp or an ssi. Do they really make a noticeable difference like I've heard and are they totally safe to run without a controller? I'm not willing to run the risk of burning down a motor to gain a couple horsepower. Reliability is always my number one priority.

Low elevation you may see a very small gain, 5000+ft I don't think it would do anything. Imo, I wouldn't waste money on it.

You will get 1000 different opinions.
I put a BMP when I bought my 14 HCR new, I thought by the seats of my pants that it made a huge difference, in acceleration and top end power.
All manufacturers make Hp claims. Just haven't actually been dynoed, I know D&D has had one dynoed with significant midrange gains, +-9hp or so.
No you do not need a programmer for a Y pipe. You could certainly put one on.

Just like Readymedic said, your going to get a ton of different opinions on it.

I put a BMP Y pipe and can on my 15 before adding the full pipe and riding it with vs. without, I felt it made a big difference in the "snappyness/torquiness" of the engine. It's one of the cheapest and easiest performance mods you can do, I have at least an aftermarket y pipe and can on all my sleds now. Again, my riding opinion and not dyno results. D&D makes a great y, I like BMP, but have been looking at the SSI one as well. Stay away from speedwerx, from my experience, I've had two of their Ys, both cracked at the crotch weld and they wanted me to pay almost the cost of a new one to reweld them..

You will lots of different opinions..... Here is a different one. They do very little that you will notice. They can make the peak operating rpm width a bit broader. If you want something noticeable get a full jaws exhaust and controller.

I put a D&D on my 10 M8 and I wouldn't say it added rpm but it sure cleaned the thing up. Throttle response was noticeably improved, enough that my riding buddy commented. Just my experience.

I have a 2014 m8000, and my buddy has a 2015. Both clutched the same. We ride at 8-10,000 and these 2 sleds run neck and neck. I put a bmp y pipe on mine, and changed nothing else and my sled will outrun his now by about 2 sled lengths. Seems like the bmp likes to run at about 8000-8100, where the stock likes about 8100- 8200.

Thanks for the info guys. I've decided that I'll get one over the summer. Just to decide on which brand. Was leaning toward bmp but the ssi y-pipe is much cheaper for some reason?? I haven't priced out a d & d one yet but I've been happy with their products in the past so would definitely consider it.

Just got a full BMP exhaust and was impressed with the ypipe on it. Very solid build and the sled runs and sounds amazing with it.

Stainless Y pipe

Hi guys.

Our new Y pipe really makes some serious gains in which you can feel. It gains 7 hp and 4 lb/ft of torque in the mid range. Peak hp gains of 3-5.
At 8100 it gained 3 and then at 7800 and 8300 it added 5. So it has very broad powerband. We dyno tested it at Simon Cpr. Also had a customer who had one at dynotech, he picked up the same power as we did at Cpr.
We will send another one to dynotech for his independent testing as well.

But when your riding you can feel the acceleration gains and the improved low end, the motor will rev quicker. The broader powerband makes it easier to tune because you can run it at 7900 or 8300 and it pull hard at all rpms in that range.
We typically add 1.4 grams to each weight (one magnet with our weights) to the clutch with the Y pipe added, though you can run stock clutching and let it rev more too. Some customers reported that they had to add 2.8 grams per arm with the weights. I'm sure it depends on snow conditions and altitude.

They are stainless steel and polished. We spent a lot of time on tapered angles, volume, and length. The one that works the best ended up the same length as stock, yet it acts more like a longer one with the torque gains it produces, but that is because of the volume and the angle. We had another version that was longer than stock and though more volume than stock, still less than what we ended up with, and it make about 3 hp throughout the powerband. But the angle of the Y pipe coming out of the cylinder really affected things a lot, including where we change the angle the other way before the outlet. That extra volume right before the outlet brought the torque in the mid range way up.

For only $149, our Speed Shop Y pipe is a great bolt on item that works well.

It is a little lighter too. 1.7 lbs instead of the stock 2.1 lbs.

Goes well with our stainless steel canister muffler that only weighs 4.75 lbs. (17-19lbs lighter depending on whether you have the blanket version or not)

They are made of 16 gauge. most of the weight loss in where the flange is because we don't use the cross bar. The stock y pipe has and additional steel ring under the retainer ring for the donut gasket. Ours doesn't need that ring either, so that is the second spot where we reduced a little weight. Its really not a lot, but I simply was just pointing it out. We have used them with the Boondocker turbos on our Pro Lites this season.

I like the sounds of that mountain series kit ssi has on their site, as I hit lower elevations sometimes on the way into the hills I'm thinking of doing the y-pipe, reeds, and can from ssi when my new mountain cat shows up in the fall ?

I too liked the look of the mountain performer kit. So I ordered it. Showed up right away, and they answered all of my dumb questions via email within the day I asked. Waiting on their pipe to have in stock.

What was the price of the kit shipped to you?
