Went to start my 2008 Nytro MTX this weekend after a summer of storage. It would not start, but the solinoid was clicking. After a few tries it started to blink a code 12. which is crank sensor position. But after some review online i jumped the starter relay and it cranked right up. My question is, is it the starter relay or the crank position sensor? any help would be great.

I would start with the starter relay. They are known to go bad on the 08s and a quick and cheap fix.

starter relay

x3 with starter relay had same problem with my 09 i think its the metal vents letting in snow on top. lands right on the relay. fixed it with wire mesh for stucco a little trampoline material and some rivets , haven't had a problem since i replaced the relay. mike

2008 nytro not starting

I have a 2008 nytro and it did have problems starting. Relay was fine. We had to pull the starter and replace the brushes. They were totally shot.

Its likely the contacts at the plug on the relay, they corrode really bad all the time. You might luck out and be able to clean them then di-electric grease the $hit out of the connection. Worth a try before buying a new relay. I carry a spare relay with me all the time.

Relay:

The crank sensor is a result of low crank speed or crank speed failure....meaing the crank failed to turn the engine over sucessfully.

Been there, bought the shirt. As was said, the starter relay (and all other relays on the Nytro for that matter) are prone to corrosion. Dielectric grease and a replacement.

BTW. Peeing on the front 4 relays is the "in the field" solution to frozen relays when your fuel pump fails to engage. If it hasn't happen to you.......it will.

Went to fire up my 08 after sitting all summer and same thing....turn the key and nothing with a code 12 flashing on the dash. Replaced the stater relay and it fired right up.

WARNING. There are 2 different parts from Yamaha.
3EL-81940-02-00.....($44)
8GL-81940-00-00.....($65)

My dealer told me the 65 dollar one was the new updated version and would fit my 2008. :face-icon-small-dis WRONG!!The plug is totally different, it didn't work on my 2008.

I don't know what year Yamaha changed the plug, but hopefully your dealer is smarter than mine.

Hey, thanks for all the help, I bought a new relay and now no troubles, I tried the die-electric grease and it worked better but still had issues, would take a couple of turns on the key to start. New relay works great and will keep the old one as a spare in my bag.
