Provide Input to Travel Management in Southeast New Mexico
Carlsbad BLM Hosting Public Workshops
If you are a rider in southeast New Mexico - HEADS UP! The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carlsbad Field Office will be hosting two public workshops on their resource management planning (RMP) process.
Two important questions: 1. What are these meetings? 2. Why go?
Answer #1 - The BLM announced a RMP revision last year and started the 'scoping process'. The scoping report has been released and the BLM is preparing to identify 'alternatives' that address the issues identified in scoping. Some of the items presented at the workshops include:
  1. Review and discuss potential management alternatives for special designations, such as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, within the Planning Area;
  2. Review and discuss potential management alternatives for visually sensitive areas within the Planning Area; and
  3. Identify potential management alternatives for transportation routes on BLM lands in the Planning Area.
Answer #2 - The answer is contained in the third item above. 'Identify transportation routes' means MAKE DECISIONS ON WHERE PEOPLE WILL BE ALLOWED TO RIDE AND DRIVE. That issue can't possibly be any more important someone who loves to ride OHVs. There is another important reason to attend the workshop. Only people who have 'participated' in the process (writing comments, attending meetings, etc.) will have the required 'standing' to protest the final decision if we don't like it. Be sure you sign your name and let them what organization, if any, to which you belong.
The two workshops (both will cover the same topics) will be held in Carlsbad and Artesia at the following locations:
February 1, 2012
Pecos River Conference Center
711 Muscatel Dr. in Carousel House
Carlsbad, NM 88220
February 2, 2012
Fairgrounds Community Center
3402 S. 13th Street
Artesia, NM 88210
There will be two workshop sessions, one afternoon and one evening session, held in each location. The first session will begin at 1:00 pm and will conclude at 3:30 pm. The second session will begin at 6:00 pm and will conclude at 8:30 pm. The workshop sessions at each venue will discuss the same information. BLM staff members will be available following each workshop session to answer any additional questions you may have about the RMP process.
Yes, attending public meetings isn't as much fun as riding or laying on the farkles. But in the long run, it will be far more important to being able to continue to do what we all love so much.
