Fixing my buddy's rewind. When I fish the rope out, how many winds do I put on the spring before I stick it out the hole? I obviously haven't taken it apart yet due to my dumb question. Itsjust cold out

Zero, you just want a little tension on the rope with it sticking out... you'll give it a good preload when you pull it out to the side panel.
When I do mine I wind the sheave about 4 1/2 turns till the hole in the sheave lines up with the hole on the housing, clamp with a spring clamp, and feed the end of the rope into the sheave and make my knot

I agree with none. Pulling it out the cowling puts plenty of preload.
