Take a look at the photos and let me know what you think. This is the clutch off my 03 Escape.

As you can see, the weights have worn into the side of the clutch and into the spider a little bit. Salvageable?
Also curious what weights and spring guys are using... winter brew recommended 10-64 weights with an almond/round spring, currently it has 10-60 weights with a black/green stripe spring. Stock motor, SLP intake mods, 159" track.

It looks rebuildable to me. You will need to get it rebalanced after those weights have rubbed like that and then will need to run some shims on the weights to take up the slack.

The weights may need some new bushings too I would assume but can't tell just from pics.

Thats pretty hammered. The money you are going to spend to rebuild it would probably be better towards a new one, or maybe you could find a used one in decent shape for about what it would cost to rebuild it. You could patch it together, but I don't think it would be the best way to spend your dollar.

Winter brew knows his clutching for the 8's. I was running 10-64's with 140/320 spring and SLP 50/34 mountain helix with SLP yellow/purple spring with my twins, recomended by Winter Brew. I ran the 10-64's with my SLP single also stock helix and spring. Can't remember my primary spring.

Completely rebuildable, not that bad off.

1 - Weight bushings are shot, replace them
2 - Check the rollers to make sure they are ok, but probably are
3 - Where the weights have worn into the sheave at the pivot clean it up with a dremel and small porting tool then install a set of comment pin washers in there
4 - Shim the buttons out so they are tight
5 - While you have it apart maks sure the belt clearance is set right
6 - HAVE THE WHOLE THING BALANCED after doing all the work

Yeah, what sledguy said.

Also, when the weight pins are out, check them to see if they are worn down at all. I had one do that a while back and the new weight bushings helped, but the pins were worn enough to let the weight slop over again.

I am working on one that is almost as bad as RMKCowboy's. I didn't know about putting washers on the weight pins. I dug through SLP's book and couldn't find pin washers. Are they available elsewhere or should I just dig through my bolt bin? Thanks.

I buy all my parts from Hi Performance Engineering.

The washer is shown in this picture.

HPE's part number for just the washer kit is 204203 and you get 6 of them... so you can do 2 clutches.

Any really thin steel washer will work that fits the weight pin... I just buy these because they work well. The object is to keep that weight from chewing in to the alum of the weight boss.

In picture #3 it looks like the button on the unloaded side is smashed, its hard to get them out in that condition without crumbling them. New buttons may be on the list too.

What do I need to look for with the rollers... I assume as long as they actually roll and aren't sloppy they are okay? Good to know it can be saved, hopefully I can get it gone through and get on the snow sometime soon. I know at least one of the buttons is pooched but all the others look good, so if they can be shimmed that would save a bit of coin that I can put towards a new belt so I'm not running w/o a spare anymore  (had to finish last season without a spare after blowing a belt)

I'm not second guessing his recommendation at all, I just know zilch about clutching and don't know what effect going to heavier weights will have. If I just run the heavier weights without swapping the spring what will it do?

Make sure the rollers are not siezed, scored or visibly worn. Also make sure the washers on the sides are still there.

Buttons are $1.25, if your bushings are loose change them too.

It will not pull the RPM's it should.
So should I leave it all alone or ??? I dropped the clutch off at Allsport on Saturday (after almost buying a new 09 Dragon...) for a rebuild. They were going to do some looking around on clutching specs before deciding to stick with 10-60's or swap to 62 or 64 weights. A new spring really isn't in the budget, but if I need it I can figure something out.

The almond round is nearly the same as your black/green. I don't know how you are going to pull 64's with nearly the same spring and not changing anything else if you were only pulling 60's before. Seems like you should have been pulling more than 60's before but I have never ran one stock.

If you decide to go with 62's I have a set I would sell cheap, they probably could use new bushings.

What r's was it spinning before?

Make sure if you stay with your 60's that you rebush them at least, or its going to keep chewing into clutch.

Allsport is going to tell you it doesn't need balanced, and they don't even know who to have you send it to. They told a friend that a week or so ago. They told him if you are going to do that you might as well buy a new one. I would have told them to warrantee my crank then. I personally wouldn't spend $5 on a clutch that I wasn't planning on balancing.

Thanks for the offer devil... I will call Allsport here in a bit and tell them to throw another set of 60's in there. I asked them about balancing and they told me the same thing... "well it's balanced from the factory." There is an SW member from 9 mile falls I believe that I'm going to get in touch with about the balancing because he's the only local source I know of.

So... BAD NEWS.
Just got a call from Allsport Polaris. Even though they told me up front it would be no more than about $200 to rebuild my f'ing clutch, they just looked it over and said no LESS than $360 to get it rebuilt now.

Anyone have a decent used P-85 forged spider clutch they'll sell me for a song? Looks like my season may have just screeched to a halt again.
