Can someone tell me how to convert a 1990 Indy 500 to run premix?

Or even how to tell if the oil pump is working. I got a 1990 indy 500 thats been sitting a long time and wanna make sure there's going to be oil getting where it needs to be.

Thanks!

The pump sits below the carbs. You can pull the pump off the motor and use a drill and turn the pump and watch one of the oil lines to see if oil comes out. That will tell you if it is pumping.

Or, you can fill the resevoir all the way up. Premix the first tank of gas to make sure there is oil and then go ride. If the pump is working you'll be making your own smoke screen, but that's ok. After a day of riding check the oil res and see if it has gone down, if so then the pump is working.

Well today I got the gas tank, and oil tank all cleaned up with new clear lines. I can see it's sucking gas so I fired it up and to my amazement it idles ! ! I knew a few days ago it fired on eather, but wow it idles. lol

Also the carbs looked surprisingly clean and shiny on the inside.

But here's the problem, I watched the oil line and theres a air bubble just sitting there. So I don't think its sucking or pumping oil. I would like to just run premix if its easy. Do i just block the oil pump line and run premix on this motor? Or do I have to accomidate for some low end lubing? Help! I don't wanna burn this thing up.

oil bubbles look like there sitting there at idle.maybe unhook and try to turn oil pump full open and see what happens.?edit.after oil in the gas tank.

This works great and will let you know in one ride if the pump is working. And as Snowmobiler said, hold the oil pump lever wide open when it's idling, and you should be able to see oil traveling through as well.

Premixing is an unneeded pain in the *** on anything that is stock. All this changing oil injection over to premix stems from an ancient bombardier problem of a plastic gear stripping in the oil injection pump drive. I would bet of the thousands and thousands of indy 500s out there that very few have gone down on lack of oiling. Start that sled up with the air box off, reach down between the carbs to the oil pump lever, hold the lever wide open and if after a few minutes it gets really smokey at idle you are good to go. Also if you are worried about the cable breaking dont, if the cable breaks the pump goes wide open. One thing i do suggest is checking to see if the low oil light works. Many of these motors have gone down after the cable breaks and the guy rides it till the oil tank is dry.

please don't start sleds on ether. it's terrible for them. try wd-40 or propane, both are a bunch more friendly. I keep a mustard bottle filled with fuel/oil to prime the carbs/cylinders

I'll have to try WD-40. I know eather is'nt great for it but terrible sounds, well, terrible...

Thanks for the tips people. I'll try the wide open oil lever smoke out technique. :)
