AXYS Backcountry Tools

Hey everyone. I’m interested in what everyone brings on rides for tools for their Axys. I’m thinking of putting a little kit together. I have seen the burandt tool kits but I’m not too worried about a few pounds and feel like you can make a kit a lot cheaper. Any input would be great.

I share the load with my riding buddies- They carry the fuel and I carry the tools... One thing for sure you cannot have to many tools out in the backcountry ..even a ratchet strap has got us home with a broken suspension, and hose clamps for a broken tie rod.
Using your imagination will award with a unique load of tools.

I feel it is a little more challenging now days since things are torx, philips, etc

torx allen set or just a couple little ones that fit the few bolts
screw drivers,
vise grips,
needle nose,
little spring puller
few common size wrenches
wratchest straps, 2 preffered
duct tape
hose clamps

nothing too crazy. That goes in tunnel bag as long as the bulk of my food/water. I eat out of the tunnel bag always. Save my 2 waters and protein bars for my pack. Often keep a reeses fast break and a mountain dew in there for a little sliver of happiness if I ever end up in a overnight bad situation.

x2 on this one. Bailing wire got my buddy out (broken tie rod end) and me (broke the brake lever off on a tree, dumping brake fluid out on the hood, tank, seat, etc.) - [at different times]

The axys is pretty damn standerdized.
10 13 15 and 17mm sockets, small extension, same with a t40(or 45?) Good adjustable wrench(x2) and vice grips.

I have done full tunnel swaps on an axys and I can assure you it doesn't take many tools to fully tear this sled to a pile of parts. Just make sure you have a handful of the right ones.

On top of what everyone else mentioned, I recommend carrying a spare belt deflection adjustment screw/nut for the secondary clutch. Mine broke just as I entered into a riding zone with shoulder deep pow. Made for a very interesting trip back to the truck.

A little tool that got added to my tool kit last year (it actually lives in the front pocket of my vest) and proved to be really handy was this little Topeak Ratchet kit. The ratchet is nice, not chintzy.

For our application:

-Swap the tire levers out for a 3/8" socket adapter for an impact driver
-Remove the T10, 2, 2.5, and 3mm bits (those don't exist on our sleds)
-Add a 1/8" driver tip for adjusting belt deflection
-Add T30 and T40 bits

That will pretty much take care of all the small fasteners on the sled.

The other tool that lives in the front of my vest is my Leatherman Crunch.

I run Very similar.
(Plus spare parts a 5/8 or 16mm for rear axle bolt and a 1/8” allen wrench for belt deflection)

Long handle 1/4” drive snap on ratchet FTW.

7-16” is belt deflection jam nut.

9/16 will work for a 14mm bolt but often not the other way around so i carry a 9/16”.

Note the added 1/8” allen for belt deflection and 5/8” / 16mm wrench for track tension adjustment.

9/16... 2 cut in half for tki belt adjustment. There is a hair dryer blocking ez access. 7/16 are the nuts that hold my light wt battery box that has been cut down by half. Now it sits down low. Access for belt replacement if needed.

These are all good ideas. But add a couple good small rags. Nothing worse than having oil all over the place and nobody wants to use their Klim gear to clean it up. I had a chain case fail and that was a mess.

Nobody has mentioned paracord, I bet once a year the paracord gets brought out for somebody's sled.
The uses for that stuff are limitless. Cut a branch and lash that sucker to a broken a arm, tie rod, or shock. I've even rode for multiple days in cooke like that with a bent/cracked alternative impact a arm on my axys. Wrapped a 1-1.5" stick from one end to the other. Broke the stick once on a jump i shouldn't have done, got a new one and kept on going till I got home and got a replacement a arm. It doesn't take up much room in my tunnel bag and I never go anywhere without it.
