Crank run out spec Pro Rmk 800

Hey guys I was just wondering if you can check crank run out somewhat accurately with out tearing the engine down. I recently had to cut my clutch off and wanted to check to see if it is in spec.

Also does anyone know what the run out spec is for the 800?

This is from the service manual from 2011. I remember checking runout on edge chassis sleds, and the only way I could hold the base of the dial indicator in place was to clamp it around the cylinders with a couple of long gear clamps put together.

.0025" ? Seems very liberal. No wonder these things shake like a wet dog...

Just remember, desired is .000"

It is difficult to check runout of the shaft in the engine and get an accurate reading.

Make sure the spark plugs are out... and mount the dial indicator firmly to a fixed point on the crankcase.

Turn the engine slowly and smoothly.

If it comes out bad... you will THEN need to pull the engine/crank and then do a good bench test... If it reads bad... it could be the bearings, the crank is out of true... or a bent PTO stub etc.

The older manuals for the 800's in the Dragons called for .0015" max runout. I wonder why it has been increased? I would think one at .002" would "buzz" pretty bad.

Back in my Edge days I used to check the crank run out every season. The old 800s had a bit of a reputation........

Mine started life at .0015" & never changed, thankfully!

If I recall Indy Dan recommended action be taken on anything over .0025" on those engines.

Probably worth giving him a shout as he has a bit of a reputation for knowing what it takes to keep these CF1-2 engines together.....

Yeah I will ask him next week as he should be sending me my new Balanced primary clutch.

.0025 runout max is what I found also I just thought that was a bit much is all.

I am just nervous from cutting the clutch off is all!!

I have always checked closer to the end of the taper. My 2013 was darn near zero. I checked my '15 and got just shy of 0.0015

Don't suppose you can take a pic of how or where you mount your dial indicator ?
