FX Nytro RTX Drops Exhaust Valve ( motor completely junk )

O

New member
2008 FX Nytro RTX 2,300 miles on it the face of the center cylinder exhaust valve just falls off and it takes the Head , the cylinder case, the lower half of the case, the rod goes through the starter and takes it out. the only thing that looks good is the crank and cams. There was no signs of any other problems inside the motor.

Now I paid $10,000.00 and it was only worth probabaly $6,000.00 at the time of the trouble. So a used motor $2,000.00 plus time in shop $1,000.00 I guess if Yamaha does not get behind it, this becomes the most expensive yamaha I have ever owned. Maybe it comes apart and goes to EBay but what a pain in the a$$.

Does anyone have any advice on what you would do if this were your problem?

Thanks Everyone,

The FlatLander just wants to ride.

Is this a stock motor or has it been apart? I see this often when people have the head off the valve shims will shift and fall out of the hole and cause the locks to come off and let the valve fall.

The motor is never been apart or worked on other than oil changes, the valve stem still moves freely up and down in the head, so not even a bent stem. This thing ran and sounded great b-4 this.

I heard of a guy around here yesterday who also lost his motor in his nitro. (08 MTX) The guy I talked to didn't know what happened, but he said the owner thought he had blown a head gasket, checked it out and he had blown the motor. What he means by blown I have no idea. Wish I knew as I'm looking at buying a nitro... His was a stock sled.

Has any one seen a four stroke Yamaha have a problem like this?

Did Yamaha get behind it and try to keep there customer?

This sled was 10 months out of warrenty and they are saying no to fixing it. I will not put more than half the value of the sled into it to fixing it. My dealer charged me full list price for this sled when I bought it. It is the 40th anv. sled witch is how many years I have been riding Yamaha the first was a 292 gp . Now if I have to part this one out with only 2,300 miles on it, I will have a bad taste in my mouth with the company I have spent 42 years bragging about. I have had more than a dozen Yamaha sleds and 2 dozen Yamaha motorcycles over the years, I still have my first 1972 Yamaha AT2 125 enduro.

This will have been my last yamaha product I ever purchase if I have to part this one out!!!

I wonder if I could sell it to Polaris or Artic Cat to use as a demonstration of Yamaha's 4 stroke's and how they take care of their loyal customers ?

Hey Oliver,

Who is your dealer? If there will be any "stepping up to the plate", your dealer of such a long time can help you out a lot. Let us all know and if there is anything that can be done, I'll try to help.

I had a similar issue with mine turboed and my dealer stepped upto the plate. I would talk to a Yamaha rep as well. Last thing they want is trash talk about there so called bullet proof sleds, but be nice!

SCMURS ,

THANKS

The dealer for my last 25 years has been Century Power and Equipment in Stillwater, Mn. The service writer has gone the extra mile but the owners have done nothing for me except charge me full retail for the machine because I had to have it. And I absoulty love this sled it took some dialing in on the suspension, but all I can say is wow what a fun sled, just 10 years to late for my style of riding now.

Oliver,

If the owners are the problem, I would suggest that you "gently" remind them that Tousley and Waldoch are not that far away and you will be taking your business elsewhere. I personally have a great amount of respect for John Waldoch and would be more than willing to give him a call to help out your situation. PM me with some contact info and I will see if I can help.

Well at this point Yamaha is offering to sell me a crate motor for $2,000.00 and I pay all of the labor out and in about $1,500.00 so $3,500.00 to fix a sled that would maybe sell for $6,500.00
I paid $10,150.00 for it less than two years ago and it is a junk sled now . I just put my first set of slides on it and wear rods on at 2,200 miles and at 2,300 miles I need a new motor. Their own maintaince plan calls for the first valve adjustment at 25,000 miles, I didn't even make it to 10% of that.
It is a real tier jerker when you have a payment book that out lasts the sled. Now I won't be able to ride for the next 3 years because I will get to keep paying for Yamaha's mistakes. They said it's too bad that I just ended up with a bad one, admitting that they have some problems and are not going to own up to the responsibility.

I told them that there is no way that I will ever be able to buy a Yamaha product again. I am 53 and hope that I have at least 15 more years of riding left in me. I also offered to buy a brand new Quad 700 Grizzly from them if they would just pay for the motor and I would pay the labor. And the answer was they just didn't want my business. So I offered to tell my story with every nut, bolt, and washer I have to sell from this sled to try and recap my loss with YAMAHA. I used to be the biggest advocate for them now after 42 years I have to do a 180, it breaks my heart.

Sounds like you've had good luck with Yamaha in the past...?
That's a lot of time at the same dealer & same product. I would hope they would work with you. $3500 for a new motor istalled - are you kidding..?

It costs more than that to do a POS 2 stroke in Canada. Especially with the dealer doing the R&R. Good to know if I ever have trouble..

Chock it up to - "It was just your turn" & pay the bill.

Crate motors (which aren't available to the public) cost $3500 5 months ago. So you're getting a big break there. The choice is yours.

Mine did the same thing after the head shim went in. Motor was brand new Yamaha stood behind it.

Oliver

I have had enough I am selling this thing.
The head can be repaired, The center section block needs to be replaced and the bottom section may be welded, the starter needs to be replaced needs one new rod and piston.
I bought this 2008 FX Nytro RTX new and kept it inside looks great 40th Aniversary Red, White & Black 196 studds up the center the suspension was serviced and new slides put on less than 100 miles ago, new belt, improved hand warmers added. Verry nice other than the motor ishue.

the Sled is in Stillwater, MN
$3,500.00

Wow 36 Yamaha products over 42 years and now they are the the worst thing in the world. I cant believe that your going to jump ship because of one bad seen in you loooooooong history of riding. Figure out how much $$ you have spent on your sleds and bikes. Does not sound like you have a problem with Yamaha but with your dealer.

Oliver, The X loyal yamaha customer

Bamboo,You may be some what correct when you say it is the dealer that is the problem. I think that the dealer could have argued my case a bit harder with the Manufacture , but I also think both the dealer and the manufacture become complacent with a long time customer and feel he will just come back any way. Well to that I say one of us is just going to have to wake up, I guess it will be me riding something else next.
I have been working direct with customer relations at Yamaha to just get them to replace the broken parts and I will pay the labor at the dealer, and I have had no luck. They simply tell me (we know that we can't build all of our product perfect and I just ended up with a bad one)! Words direct to me from Yamaha.
So if you don't have an extended warranty on your 09 Nytro and can still get it I would strongly recommend it. Also check your belly pan to the oil pan mine was already worn half way through.

Oliver.

I would not give up so quick. Every manufacturer has their "Monday"/"Friday" built product. Happens all the time. Not to bash any other brand but You have had some awesome luck with Yamaha so far. Kinda sad to see you jump on another brand. Considering the amount of $$ you have spent with Yamaha your fix in $$ is quite small. I know its still sucks to have to fix something but over the years of no fixes this is a small % to the amount spent. I figure you were due a bad one. Now that you had it, as hard as it is to swallow, take the pill and go on for another 42 years of trouble free riding. In my eye's your way ahead of the pack.

loyal

i had the same thing happen but was with a grizzly 660. bearing went in the crank and completly ****ed everything. 5000 dollars later out of my pocket becasue it was 8 months off warrenty. was i mad yes, but sure would not trash talk yamaha over 1 motor.
