News letter 12/12

Howdy everyone! The Christmas season is quickly up on us and we are getting Christmas Snow!!!!

We have only gotten 6” so far but enough to totally cover any gravel spots and pavement on the Denali.

Temperatures remain mild in the Maclaren Valley the upper teens to low 20’s everyday. Heck, yesterday they hit 32 degrees but it only brought more snow. With the little flakes we have been getting here and there we have a good 10 inches of snow on top of the base we already had.

Since the lack of snow has forced the cancellation of some dog races, there will be a dog race at the Maclaren River Lodge this weekend. Sort of a “come as you are” 50 mile race on Saturday afternoon.

For those of you coming in from the Paxson side of the highway, Paxson Inn will have lodging there and will be expecting you. If you would like to join the race email us at maclarenlodge@starband.net or call (907) 822-5444. If you are coming out to Maclaren by snowmachine, be aware of the teams on the trail for the race will be going on Saturday afternoon. 10 teams have already signed up with more expected so there will be lots of teams on the trail between Paxson and the Maclaren Valley.

Paxson to Maclaren Valley – fresh snow has covered the pavement and the trail has had snowmachine traffic on it already, with wide heavy sleds.

Maclaren Valley to Cantwell – fresh snow has covered the gravel in the Mile 60 area and there was dog team traffic and snowmachine traffic on that yesterday.

7 Mile Lake – The trail into 7 Mile Lake has been put in all the way through Glacier Gap, it is in good shape but there were a few rocks still showing and some brush between Glacier and 7 Mile. Until last night the lake was swept clean of snow and a couple of small overflow spots were showing.

Maclaren Glacier Trail – we have had one rider take that trail. It is good, especially when you get off the trail and get high. There is some overflow and some open water in the Valley, but good otherwise.

Lake Louise Trail – until the snow gets deeper and the weather a bit colder to freeze up some spots, the trail has not been traveled.

Take Care and we look forward to seeing you on the trail!!!!

Any word on Summit? Want to go south but wondering if anyone has been there. If it is cloudy we are thinking of Cantwell but that seems to be pretty thin yet.

Here is hoping everyone had the best Christmas ever…. Here in the Maclaren Valley, we got a light Christmas snow. So that makes plenty to ride in, about 3 feet or more in places. The temperatures are staying mild, in the upper teens to 20’s. And still calling for a few more inches of snow in the higher elevations. There is still a lot of brush showing but for those of you that rode out here last year, we have more snow, much more snow than last year at this time. If you remember the snow did not really fall until the middle of January. All the trail have a great base system and are in great shape.

A reminder to everyone, the Gin Gin 200 Sled Dog race will be going on Friday and Saturday, most likely into Sunday Morning.

Lots of teams of dogs out 35 -40 teams from Paxson to the Su Bridge and back. Please use Caution when using these trails – Glacier Gap and the new Mac-Su Loop. Saturday evening all the teams will be heading back toward Paxson, they will be in the Paxson Inn Parking lot and please use Caution there also.

Trial Report:

Paxson to Maclaren Valley: Great shape, smooth and only a small portion of pavement showing along the edges of the road.

Still a couple of drifts in High Valley around mile 30 or so. There have been some strong winds

Blowing, as always from 15 Mile to around 21 Mile DH. Use caution in these areas.

Maclaren to Cantwell: Great shape – awesome shape – still a little bit of a skinny spot around mile 70, the gravel is totally covered

With snow, just not deep.

Glacier Gap: The trail is all the way through, will be marked this afternoon and will be even more traveled by the end of

the weekend

Lake Louise: We have not worked on this trail, we have been waiting on more snow and now that we finally got some

we will begin working on this trail soon.

Maclaren Glacier Trial: Virtually untouched, lots of brush until you get really high and some open spots on the smaller creeks.

**New**Mac – Su Loop: This trail takes off at the Maclaren Lodge and runs down the Maclaren to the Su River and back up to the Su Bridge and out on the Denali Highway. This is an awesome trail, in fantastic shape, 110 mile this Is the route that the Gin Gin 200 will be using.

DEC 31 – MACLAREN LODGE NEW YEARS EVE PARTY – with lots of fireworks and a hugh bonfire – ONLY THE OLDER BUNK CABINS ARE AVAILABLE AT THIS POINT FOR NEW YEARS EVE AT MACLAREN RIVER LODGE. Remember - *Don’t Drink and Drive*

Take Care and we look forward to seeing you on the trail!!!!

LAKE LOUISE AREA TRAIL REPORT:

NO NEW SNOW OF ANY SIGNIFICANCE OVER THE LAST 10 DAYS. That

translates to good cruising on lake trails, but just an OK ride on the trail

to Crosswinds. You don't even want to try the trail to Big Rock and others

like it. You and your iron horse would be most unhappy. You should know,

however, that we are expecting snow. Tonight. Should that occur, expect to

see a bold red alert at the top of the weather page.

Rode from Paxon to McLaren today.. Cold Cold is the best way to describe. It was about -10 @ Paxon when we left.. -25 by the time we go to McLaren. 14 mile was windy going out, but at least 40mph winds when we came back about blew me and sled off the trail. Snow, wind blown...

Went to paxson this weekend and rode up to the pipline and then back into the hills near the glacier river. The snow was fun in the alders, swamps, and trees. I rode the wifes phazer all day, it was really fun in the trees, left the turbo Nytro at home. The weather has been crazy here, -50 last week and now almost 45 this week. It was raining at black rapids and snowing at paxson. I''ll be back next weekend.
