I switched to the 14 secondary on 13 m800 the other night. Changed weights to the 68g and a new yellow and white spring. Went to load on trailer and clutch wouldn't kick in tell 4400 rpms, I'm thinking my old setup was around 3600rpms. What did I screw up?

The yellow white spring works really good..........to hold papers down with.

Get something in the 120-130 initial rate and you will have your engagement where it needs to be.

The other thing you may have to do is set the belt deflection. If it is too loose, it will cause a high/harsh engagement.

Yellow/White has a 122 initial rate... Per Cat specs.

Put the black Polaris spring in and drop the engagement to 3600rpms. Are the arctic cat springs really that bad?

The weights moved real easy. Even double checked when I took the yellow spring out. The belt deflection was maybe a little tight but didn't seem to bother the Polaris spring. It is a new belt also. But don't think that should matter. Thanks for the help!

I would bet the weight pin nut is to tight. The weights should move easy.

That's what sounds like to me Wyo!!

Pull it out and put it on our work bench ...remove cover and spring and see how it feels gliding up and down ...look for cracks and binding
I run that green spring it's the first one listed in my spring list I posted
3300 to 3600 engagement
I also run the second spring listed ...yellow/green and that's 3800 to 4000 engagement
Keep us posted !!

P.S. ...make sure nothing else is hanging it up in the driveline (chain case)
Causing extra rpm requirement to get you moving

Question

So you say your sled is a 2013 M800? And you just changed your clutching to the 2014 specs? Did you by any chance change the gearing as well? One thing I noticed is that the 2014 came with 68g weights and a 2.67 gear ratio and the 2013 came with 70g weights and 2.33 gear ratio. Everything else the same Spring rates and helixs. Ive been trying to understand the differences and how it works but its a little perplexing.

What weights did you take out of your primary when you changed your weights?

A while back someone on here did some testing of springs, cats clutch engages at 2.75" and finish at 1.5" cats Y/W engaged at 88lbs. and finished at 250. Pol. black engaged at 55 and finished at 260. Speedwerx 120/310 was 75/270 Had a bunch more but you can see where the rating of them is a little misleading. Cat gold spring is pretty close to the pol. black even though their ratings are quite different

Thanks guys. Probably just going leave the Polaris spring in there I like how it engages. If it don't start snowing I won't have to worry about it.

Lighter weighs will raise engagement

I personally like the yellow/white spring.

I don't like the engagement real low with the 800. It likes to rev and needs the higher engagement. The M1000s with a ton of low end power work good with the lower engagement though. The Gold spring (75/275) works fine with thm

However, if you want a little lower engagement try the Arctic Cat Green spring which is like (100/315).

You said y/w but them talk about a polaris spring, which is it, did I miss something.

And gears have nothing to do with it, the old gearing is better

I had a Polaris spring and mds weights in before changed to the 14 secondary. Thought I would go with stock setup. Last year I was having trouble holding rpms. not sure if its the mds weights or something else. Being from iowa we only get a few chances to ride, let alone tinker around with a sled trying to make it run good.

edit: after re reading all the post I see the confusion. I wasn't very clear on what I was doing, and didn't type it out very well. sorry bout that.
I now have the 68g weights with the black Polaris spring. I removed the yellow green spring last night after reading a couple post. after installation of the Polaris spring the rpms where at 3600 on engagement.

Never gave the elevation difference a thought.

The rpm problem is the secondary, even the 14 secondary is hit or miss, my 14 was a joke so I sent the clutch in to get machined. Last year I know of at least 5, 14 secondaries that where warranties because of rpm issues.
