Statement as of 3:44 PM PST on January 23, 2009
... Stormy weather to affect the area through early next week...
A warm storm system will bring rain and high elevation snow to the
Sierra and western Nevada tonight and Saturday. Snow levels in
the Sierra will remain above 8000 feet this evening... lower to
7500 feet overnight... and be close to lake level by late Saturday
afternoon.
Several inches of snow is expected above 7000 feet in the Sierra
by Saturday afternoon... with up to 12 inches possible above 8000
feet. Rainfall around one inch is expected at Lake Tahoe and other
lower elevations in the Sierra... with one-half to three-quarters
of an inch of rain for locations along the Highway 395 corridor
in western Nevada. Lighter amounts are expected farther north and
south.
The precipitation will decrease to showers Saturday afternoon
before a colder storm system moves across the area Sunday and
Monday. A cold front will lower snow levels to valley floors as it
pushes southward on Sunday. This system will bring additional
snowfall to the mountains and potentially several inches to
western Nevada valleys Sunday and Sunday night. There is still
uncertainty regarding snowfall amounts with this system. With
systems dropping from the north... a small change in track can
often lead to large differences in snow amounts.
