I ride about 75/25 off trail/on trail. I need a jacket that works well for both as my family likes to trail ride and the group of guys I ride with likes to ride the back country. Here are some I have been looking at:

-NOTE: With all of these I wear a Carhart Moisture Wicking Base Layer (top and bottom) and wear Klim Extreme Pants.

1. Coldwave Velocity Jacket

2. Coldwave Avalance Jacket

3. HMK Peak 2 Jacket (with Motorfist fleece jacket)

4. Klim Valdez Parka (with their Everest Vest)

5. Motorfist Redline Jacket

6. Motorfist Rekon Jacket (with their fleece jacket)
http://www.motorfist.com/product.php?p=88&c=1
7. Motorfist Big Mountain Jacket (with their fleece jacket)

Any input is appreciated!

My old Arctic Cat Jacket is on its last leg, does not help that I lost the liner!

It is not on there but you should look at the Klim power cross pullover.
I had a Valdeze and it was way too warm.

I hate pullovers because I like to be able to unzip to control heat better down the trail and I would be using this jacket as my main winter time jacket. With going to class it could be a pain.

I recently purchased and just went out and tested the below jacket from FXR Racing. Impressive list of features and very comfortable. Zip down front, warm but not too hot, lots of venting and high quality construction.

Klim Valdez Parka and the Klim Powercross Pullover here. Great luck with both of them.

The key is dialing in the layering and what works for you. I wear a Tekvest with a jersey under both coats and rarely if ever use a midlayer.

Basically, for my upper body I start with an Under Armor heat gear shirt, then a jersey, then the Tekvest and finally the jacket.

Mornings can be a little cool on the arms but once you get going and working, it all works out. I would rather have slight chill for a little while in the morning than sweating my azzzz off all day.

Some of our riding areas have up to 15 miles each way that are trail. The Valdez would be fine w/o a tec vest and no mid layer unless it's sub zero.

When I trail ride it is about 100-200 miles a day. And I usually ride hard to get to the powder in the morning. I am also getting a new helmet and am thinking about the 509 helmet with aviator gogs, what do you guys/gals think?

Layers man.
Get a good shell and layer up for trail riding, shed a layer or 2 when you start working hard off trail.
Ounce for ounce, can't beat wool as an insulating layer. Find a good heavy wool flannel up der in da UP eh and you'll be set. If'n it's really cold, put a down vest over the woolie.
For me, in the coldest weather -10 to -20, a base layer or 2, wool shirt and down vest under a stout shell is all I've ever needed. Substitute fleece for wool if yur allergic or somethin, but wool will get you more poonie up nort anyways!

Do you trail ride? I also don't wear a tec vest

I wear a Motorfist sidehill pullover. I layer underneith and have never gotten cold. The jacket does great for keeping you dry and blocking the wind. That being said you should NEVER ride anywhere without a vest. Even trails can kill you. Chest protection is a must have.

I wore a vest once and hated it, my maneuverability was extremely compromised. Us "Pleasantly Plump" guys need as much movement as we can.

I like the accent! But I absolutely HATE wool. I hate how it makes me itch no matter what type it is. I will probably wear a moisture wicking base layer with a fleece mid layer. It looks like I probably will be going with the HMK Peak 2 jacket. It comes with the fleece mid layer/light-weight jacket and the jacket itself.

If I choose to go with something else it will the the Klim Valdez with a fleece mid layer. I can always take it when working hard in the powder.

Taking layers off reminds me, i need to get a backpack.........EBAY TIME!
