Yamaha 9 digit vin decoder

Friend of mine got a sled to sell from his boss. Never been titled. It's a Yamaha 250 Enticer, Red hood. Thinks it's a 1978 or 1979.

The vin is 8G5-016809.

Any ideas what year it is?

I need to know the year of this Phazer; I think it is a 1986. VIN 81H001317. Please help me find the site or link to bookmark for future needs. I buy, fix n re-sell Sleds for Fun.

H would be an 1987. Using the letters. Pretty sure the letters in Yamaha’s Vin’s are the year.
