From a cursory glance, if it takes a company two seasons to clear excess inventory, that suggests some very ill-informed management directives took place at an earlier date to create the heavy inventory backlog. Giving Yamaha benefit of the doubt, something must be afoot...
Aside from turbos, the four-stroke performance has plateaued at the moment. Radically new cylinder head or valve train technology would be a logical avenue for major improvement/weight savings.
