WRX pull sled???

I love the duramax, but about 2% of me wants to drive a WRX (STI??) and pull a little trailer with a sled. Has anyone done this? seen it?

I see that the wagon was rates to tow 2k#, sedan and STI not reccomended. surely a light trailer and sled coming in at 800# wouldn't be too bad.

You see cars pulling stuff all the time, shouldn't make this one any different. I wouldn't have anything over a 1 place aluminum trailer and a sled on it with very little gear and at most 1 other person in the car.

With all that you have to be at it's maximum allowable, also the only thing to be concerned about is ability on snow and ice with the trailer and probably performance tires even though it's all wheel drive.

BTW, it's not really a towing vehicle.

wrx

I have a wrx and a 96 imperza wagon 2.2 .I pull an alu. trailer with the 2.2 and plan to pull my sled with it next year if i'm going alone. I just put the hitch on it and noticed 2 things- braking distance is greatly increased I put 5-6 sheets of 4x12 drywall on and the difference is very noticable. #2 don't swerve to much! you'll get pushed all around. So.. biggest thing SLOW DOWN. I didn't put a hitch on the wrx because they just sit so low that I think I'd be scraping the whole time or pushing to much snow. It depends if the parking area is is nicely plowed. hope this helps, btw don't ya just love BOOST! Thats why I never want to ride a turbo sled, boost is worse than crack.

yo,

i got a sti and a new ford f 350.....i've often thought about using the sti to do some towing.......would look awesome to see a sled behind the suby!!!

I thought it would be savage. I can't really see myself without a truck but it's been in the back of my mind, driving a 3/4 year round just to make a couple trips to the hills with a sled deck and get a load of sod here or there is .....well I prolly wouldnt save any fuel in the STI anyways, right? haha

i got a little 96 VW passat for free, it just has some electrical issues and it has a hitch... thinking i might get a tiny little trailer. or put a sledbed on the roof... HOLY TOPHEAVY!

I would LOVE to see a Suby w/a sled behind it going thru Bozeman- the greenies would want to burn you at the stake for taking their icon car and actually USING it for good:D I would do it- as said before, ground clearance might kill you tho.

I was just thinking the same thing!!!! HMMMM, might have to cover it in the anti-wolf sticker that says "smoke a pack a day.":face-icon-small-ton

I just sold my 07 duramax and bought the new 2008 WRX STI. This car is amazing. This bad boy handles like a AWD porsche turbo and the motor pulls pretty hard, fells like an old 944 Turbo S but faster to me, def. feels faster than a non turbo porsche. I got 28 mpg coming home form the dealer. I burned 24 gal's of diesel in my truck going out to pick up the new car and 10 gals coming back with the new STI. I definitly would rec. this car!!

As far as the trailer goes, it says in the manual, that you can pull 900 lbs with the hitch that subaru sells.

I'm loving this market - we don't put much mileage on in and around town, and need a truck - looking for a 3500HD single rear wheel - and the deals out there are amazing. Now, when we go city to city, it'll be no WRX!

Have fun.

yo,

the sti gets wicked mileage if u stay outta boost....shift at 2k etc....i've gotten over 500k to a tank....i believe a tank holds 45-50 litres.......on the downside when shifting well into boost i;ve gotten as little as 250k to a tank.....boost is fun!!!

why not the sti? sure its got a little lower suspension but it has more power to pull with

I think the WRX would work find for a little trailer and one sled ;)

just gonna throw this out there. Pulling with a turbo vehicle creates higher EGT's than driving empty. If you don't already have one I would definitely get a pyrometer and gauge. also find out what the turbo's max temp rating is. most are around 1200 degrees F. It might not seem like much to pull but that motor will work and create a lot of heat.

I owned a WRX for a little over 5 years, best car i ever owned. It easily has the power to pull a two place. Besides 4 wheel drifting on slick or gravel roads is a BLAST. The only problems i could see would be ground clearance (relatively low ground clearance) and the fact that it is a light vehicle and even with the exceptional brakes on the car you would have to keep in mind stopping distance. But if you dont plan on plowing through any deep parking lots and will be on good roads, throw some good winter tires on it and have a blast.

Dont look for great fuel mileage though, I got low to mid 20's with average driving. The turbo 2.5L outback foresters or legacies would be better than the impreza and still give you decent gas mileage, more room, and still be a blast to drive.

I bought a new WRX about five weeks ago... LOVE it. Have almost 4000 miles on it now.

I bought a hitch for it from JCWhitney but haven't had time to install it yet. I actually got it for a bike rack, but I've also been thinking about one of those little Harbor Freight trailers and using it to tow my sled instead of driving my Dodge. I think a friend is selling one of those little trailers... hmmm.... you guys got me to thinking.

With the increasing fuel costs, and the fact that the trucks costs about twice what a regular car costs, just about NOBODY around here drives trucks.... Most people just tow with their everyday driver.

Heck, I drove a Volvo 240 from the time I was 17 until I was 20, and I had my sled with me almost every weekend. We usually have two sleds on an open trailer, and just about every car works for this purpose if you ask me...

I now drive a Nissan Navara, and it tows better than my other cars, but I've even towed two sleds after my GF's WV Golf..... No problemo....
