Sounds like a stupid question, but bear with me...
I just picked up this rode-hard M6 yesterday, and tonight I was siphoning out the old gas to replace with fresh. And while looking down in the gas tank with my little LED headlamp, I saw bits and pieces of stuff in there. I cleaned out a rubber seal from the gas cap, and several pieces related to the fuel gauge, but not all of it. I'll have to fish around more tomorrow to see if I can find more.
What troubles me is that I'm not sure what's supposed to be what in there. I don't much care about the gas gauge... but it looks like there are two fuel pickups. The one on the right appears to be attached to the pump and heads up and out of the tank like it should. But the one on the left isn't connected to anything. Was the fuel gauge float attached to this, or is it supposed to be in there loose? It's too bad I can't manage to take a photo to post...
