A friend wants to use my enclosed trailer to run to the black hills from SF SD which is 400 miles one way. I was thinking 150.00.

Is your insurance going to cover him if there is an accident, a lot of threads on here about friendships going south with issues.

I think it's fair to get a little something for wear/tear/maintenance....I don't think you're out of line.

My lending stuff schedule goes like this. You damage it, you pay to fix (or replace) just as if it were your's. Something wear/tear related breaks while you're using it, it would have broken while I was using it anyways. You write the thing off....well, that's what insurance is for and you're paying the deductible.

And don't lend things to people who don't have the money to fix/replace whatever it is.....that is usually where people get in trouble.

a real friend wouldn't ask to borrow yours he'd buy his own. best way to ruin a friendship...

Where's your sense of compassion sandman haha?? I see your point, and it's definitely valid. Just sayin, I have a lot of friends a lot less well off than me that only need something they can't afford once in a blue moon. Friends with benefits only can ruin a relationship. True friends get past the bullshiz and make it right in the end. Seen both ends of that spectrum. :argue:

I agree with the wear and tear items as well. I try to keep my stuff in the best running order I can so I don't have an oh **** moment. If it's not a stupidity induced fix, I'll assume it would have happened to me and take care of it. Insurance on anything of value is not a bad idea either.

1 condition - you break it, you buy it. I've lent my trailers out for thousands of miles without collecting a dime. It's a friend, not a customer IMO.

I would never charge a friend to borrow equipment

What they said.

Not knowing the situation won't I make any comments about thinking of even charging a friend in this situation; thus I'm guessing not a very good friend.

Such minimal miles wouldn't even worry about "wear and tear" on the tires.

And if it's a good friend, odds are he's going to buy you a case of beer. :)

I guess I would not classify him as a friend someone I use to work around occasionally when I had my drywall business. He has the money to fix anything. I told 125.00 and to bring it back they way you picked up.

In that case, I would charge too...125/150 sounds fair; but if he totals the trailer, what protection do you have?

As I let a friend of a friend (that I just met) ride my jet ski once; and she sucked up a rock getting to close to the shore, basically being dumb. Said don’t worry about it, she would pay to fix it. Bill came along and she told me that was the chance I took when I let her ride it.

Now, if the ski would have just died due to mechanical failure, I would not have asked the person to fix. But being the situation was due to user error, she needed to fix it.

I chalked it up as a cheap lesson learned.

Now odds are nothing will happen to your trailer; but what if?

I would have the person sign something, and tell him nothing personal just business; it protects BOTH of us.

If he's a good friend you would just let him borrow it. And if he's a good friend he would make you take a 100.00 when he got back. And if he crashed it, of coarse he would have to pay.

x2 you should get with your agent and see what your policy is to see if they'd be covered. The other issue is the "rent" a lot of insurance policies stipulate that you can not "rent or lease" the vehicle on the policy. However in a lot of states, liability coverage will extend from the vehicle policy to the trailer (friends vehicle pulling the trailer). The policy you will have your trailer will most likely cover the physical damage to the trailer but may also have an additional rider for liability, but usually the primary liability coverage will be that of the vehicle that will be pulling the trailer.

I am an avid wakeboarder and have a wakeboard specific boat and often will take first timers and my friends, friends out riding. They can not pay me for taking them out and "coaching or giving a lesson" they can however chip gas money in. So say I accept payment for simply taking them out, they get injured, and ultimately expect me to cover their medical expenses since it was on my boat and they tell their insurance they PAID me to take them out I face a severe risk of my insurance not covering as that form of coverage is not on my policy.

The short of it is CALL YOUR AGENT and check your policy.

If he was really a friend, I'd let him take it for nothing. I wouldn't lend (or rent) it out if he wasn't a friend.

Acquaintances shouldn't even ask.

Is this to go sledding? If so and it's a friend shouldn't he have asked you to go with? I would never make a trip without throwing a invite to my friends. This could be the real question here.

I don't like lending things period, but if I knew them well enough I would let them and sure wouldn't charge them.
