So yesterday on the way up the mountain my thermostat decided it wanted to retire... no big deal, I always watch temps closely so no harm done... went from a steady 145 on a HARD packed trail to 200 in about 1/4 mile. I was watching it the whole time and shut it down right away... cooled back down to 150 and went another 200 yards before getting hot again, shut it down and pulled the thermostat out. I've been searching online and it appears the part number has been superceeded from 1206407 to 1206124, did they have a bad run with these or something? I've only ever had 2 thermostats fail on sleds in the last 15 years and this one only had 850 miles on it. I ran the rest of the day without it and honestly I couldn't tell that it wasn't in there other than it taking a little longer to warm back up after breaks. Dealer isn't open until Tuesday to inquire with them.

Only lost about a cup or less of coolant, so no big deal there, put the top piece with the o-ring back in and kept riding without issue.

did it actually break?
my sled temps have been all over the place, and running much hotter than any other sled in our group (similar setups). my temps will jump very fast. I have been thinking about the thermostat and also the temp sensor. I thought the temp sensor would read really low and then jump back and forth though ??‍♂️
I have a temp sensor on hand but would have to get a thermo.
wondering if I should start with the thermo?

94fordguy shows a picture of the broken thermostat. Mine had a similar problem like yours ran warmer than other similar sleds, erratic temp. My thermostat was broken on one side so it wouldn't close or open correctly. I defiantly take a look at your thermostat.

That's a very common failure with Axys 800's, I've replaced 4 in about 5,000 miles. Some will break and stick closed, others will fail and stick open, luck of the draw. It's the broken chunks that disappear in the cooling circuit that you cannot find or retrieve that worry me.

Thanks for the info, I have a new thermostat sitting on the counter in my garage waiting to get put in before the next ride!
