Stator resistance and peak voltage test Q's

So my sled started cutting out at full throttle and then progressively got worse. To the point that it would not rev past 4700, even with the track off the ground. So I started troubleshooting. Everything Ohm'd out correctly, but the peak voltage from the stator was only like 1.5V. Are you supposed to unplug the ECU for that peak voltage test?

Long story short, in the process of checking things, it ended up backfiring and blowing a big pile of packing out of the silencer. Now its runs right. ?

But now I am wondering about these peak voltage tests for future reference.

Thanks

Forgot to mention it is an '07 M8

I did check the voltage right at the 3 pin stator connector, with it disconnected. So unplugging the ECU shouldn't have made a difference?
