HELL’S CANYON, Weber County — A snowboarder died after an avalanche was triggered in Hell’s Canyon Wednesday.
Two snowboarders were riding together in Hell’s Canyon, which is an out-of-bounds area beyond the boundary of Snowbasin, before they decided to leave the area, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.
As they were cutting back, the first snowboarder triggered an avalanche, according to investigators. They said he was caught in the avalanche, which occurred in a confined gully that is steep and rocky.
A search dog found the snowboarder buried under about 3 feet of snow, according to the avalanche center. Investigators said he was not wearing a beacon at the time of the accident.
The avalanche center warned that Hell’s Canyon “has had a shallow, faceted snowpack much of the season.”
At least four other avalanches were reported by Wednesday afternoon. The Utah Avalanche Center warned of moderate danger in mountains near Ogden, Park City and Salt Lake Wednesday morning.

Snowboarder...

So sad for those involved. We have By far the worst avy. conditions ALL year. Every person, be it sleddin, boardin or skiin, Has to have the basic avy. gear here in Utah, Beacon, Probe, Shovel. I heard a rumor about 2 guys in an avy. at Tonys today but have heard nothing else. Lets hope for the best.

The SnowBigDeal guys rode above Fairview yesterday and told me they saw slides all over and distance triggered a couple.

Nothing but ice under there right now.
