shoulder injuries

so i was out a month ago and pulled my shoulder. didnt think much of it because i have had this same thing happen before and nothing happened just kinda hurt. the last time i finally went to get it looked at since its still not feeling that great. so found out that i tore two ligaments in my shoulder and partially tore rotator cuff. so the next question is, is have anyone tried to ride with a bad shoulder before you go in for surgery. got a trip planned this coming weekend and was just going to go out and ride one last time and try to not get to carried away but i know thats going to be real hard to just sit around if you know what i mean.

im not a dr but i say if your already scheduled to have it surgicallly repaird and you can still operate it fine go for it. i rode with my shoulder bad for a long time but mine never got bad enough to require surgery just lots of PT

yeah im in pt right now too and didnt have a date scheduled for it to get done. dont really want to have to have it done but if thats what it takes i guess

I've had 6 major shoulder surgeries and get to live the rest of my life with a 80% useless left arm. Totally ruined my life both financially and physically compared to who and what I used to be and do. While I have full mobility I have anywhere from zero strength to about 50% of the other side depending on the angle and muscle group in use. I cannot feel my pinkie finger, next in, and half of my bird finger...They never woke up after one of the cuttings. I get constant cramping on that side during driving and especially sled riding after enough pressure is put on during a days riding. Obviously pressure and swelling is a constant. Not a day goes by that it doesn't just plain old hurt! I work out four days a week minimum plus did a nonstop therapy routine just to get by and be semi functional. Took a complete season off from riding (this is my work...so that really sucked) and now basically gimp my way through.

Use me as your example of what might happen. I don't care how cool, cavalier, bad a$$, extreme, hardcore, anyone thinks they are...it is simply STUPID TO MESS WITH and you could be sorry down the road. There is absolutely NO WAY it's worth it for a stupid sled ride. You do not want to hear this but put the sled up. Get yourself fixed up with time and a quality physical therapy routine first and foremost. If you can't get into recovery with therapy then the only alternative is surgery and the correct follow up. ONCE AGAIN AS ME FOR AN EXAMPLE....DO NOT RISK IT

thanks f-bomb. yeah we have a trip planned but its only a couple day ride and isnt anything real huge like the snowies or anything. but the weather around here is complete crap right now so i dont even think its going to happen for sure. havent even gotten on the thing since i got back from when i did it. so i guess we will see how it goes this week and what the doctor says i guess

Call me a puss, but when I get hurt I don't play.

Tweak a leg muscle water skiing, done for the day.

One time I whacked my ribs hard water skiing....hurt to laugh, etc. but it was a great day for dirt biking so I headed out with my buds. I did one lap and it was all I could do to finish it. Lesson learned, went to the Doc.

It is one thing if you are making millions to ride, then push through. But if you are working to ride and have a family to provide for just suck it up and drink a beer instead of riding.

As another example to F-bombs, my father-in-law slipped and hurt his shoulder this winter. Went it since it was at work/workers comp and the doc said it was most likely a small tear. Take it easy, no lifting, etc. Well he has to lift for his work(if he doesn't work he doesn't earn) which alone would be probably OK. But he is stubborn and lifted weights as well.

Well he had his MRI today and it is a bigger tear then thought...now because he didn't listen and rest he is jeopardizing his entire summer of dirt biking and riding his Harley.

I think the saying goes - Live to ride another day. Torn rotator cuff here goin in for surgery next Thurs.

I'm told it'll likely be 6 months after surgery til I get to go try and hurt myself again. Hopefully rehab is good and that time is cut down. I got to sled ONE time this year and the prospect of not getting to mtn bike all summer is not gonna help.

X2 F-Bomb No Ride is Worth All The Problems Down The Road. Shoulders Are Difficult and Painfull. They S**k and are PAINFULL!!!! Good Luck

Been in the same boat.

Don't ride. Once it gets better ride very easy for a wile. Make sure you are at least 80% before hitting it hard.

Stay away from surgery if you can stand it AND you are not causing any further injury... Keep in mind post operative you will be in one of three conditions, 1) Better than before surgery, 2) The same before surgery, and 3) Worse than before surgery.

I broke my back twice and had to have surgery because my legs did not work right and the pain was off the scale... post operative I am much better but not 100%...

Janet tore her shoulder cuff the last year of her hillclimb racing career... still no surgery because she understands what the outcome could be...
