Project "9Rc"

Alright gentlemen, I thought I would post up some information on the latest build that started late last winter and has just been finished up......well kinda finished, for now, LOL.

Last season when I was looking to upgrade sleds and I really struggled between the 9R and the 850 in a Khaos. The reviews on the 9R were good but and it was what I wanted but I had some reservations on the P22 clutch and the lightweight crank. I also wanted a slash model but, wasn't sure on the shorter cooler and reports of higher running temps.

Well, I ended up doing an 850, Khaos Non-slash 155 and that’s where it started. First came some great conversations with Chris at BBA as well as the guys at Carl’s Cycles. Long story short here, a Carl’s Cycle Big Bore Kit was ordered from Chris at BBA. Along with the BB Kit, Chris also set me up with his clutch kit. From there came the all new re-flash from Carl’s for the 900 kit as well as their new cerakoted 900 pipe, which turned out awesome!

Next came a set of Ice Age 165 rails, Hellfire Wheels and offset axle from the guys at Ice Age. The sled also has a set of Ice Age Elevate Spindles. Needless to say, these rails and spindles are unbelievable! The quality and finish is second to none and they look amazing. Along with the new rails came a new 300LX 165 track, thanks to Tracks USA and of course all the input from guys right here on Snowest that pointed me towards this specific track.

Next up, was an upgraded shock package, which again came from BBA and their deal of the week recently. The shock package is the Fox QS3 Air shocks, which also came with some great insight once again from Chris at BBA.

Obviously, the wrap is custom and huge shout out once again to everyone at ArcticFX!!! I have had several wraps from these guys over the years to include a full wrap on our RZR Pro R4 and I have never been disappointed. They seriously have a great product and their customer service is top notch!! I highly recommend them if you are considering doing a wrap.

So in the end, I’ve got what you could call a “9Rc” or a 9R Carl’s Custom……. Complete now with a P85 clutch, 165 slash, 300LX, with a larger cooler and the standard crank. Hmmmm, maybe it’s time for a turbo?????,

Again, special thanks to,
Chris and the guys at BBA
Frank and everyone at Ice Age
Everyone at ArcticFX
The guys at Carl’s Cycle
Everyone here at Snowest
And of course the guys at Action Motorsports in Mandan ND.

What's your concern on a lightweight crank? Too good?

I haven't read anything about them failing or causing failure. For how many miles people have put on 9Rs by now, I am not concerned with the reliability. Should I be?

I will admit they have been doing good, but we are now just reaching the point of people actually getting miles on them. I hope they continue to do well, I was just a little leery of big bore combined with light weight and equaling longevity, which I was probably a little over precautions. The Carl's kit has been around and has proven itself, so I thought what the heck, lets give this a try. Additionally, as previously explained, I also wanted a bigger cooler and a P85 clutch, which I now have as well. In this day and age, the ability to change and modify things is part of the fun as well and making something unique and truly yours.

How's that pipe doing for you? I've been thinking about doing this as well but was concerned about losing pipe heat and seeing a temporary decrease in performance. Any heat problems under the hood, melting stuff etc?

At this point, very limited miles on this one but no issues what so ever thus far.

Another upgrade almost completed!! The addition of a Skinz Helium Hood, now I just need to add some Arctic FX wrap pieces which are on the way!

These hoods are crazy light weight, have great storage and change the look of the sled immensely. I'll post up a final pic with the wrap pieces but for now it's looking pretty cool!IMG_1782.jpg

How are the performance gains? Considering a 650-9r. I am leaning more towards SLP stuff, heads, pipe and tune. Not sure I want to spend the $5,000 to make it happen.

I would considering selling the 650 and either do a 9R or mod up an 850. I would look for a holdover either way but if you found a 850 holdover, you can sell the complete "new" top end and recoup some of the funds. This is what I did with my top end. The other thing that I mentioned above was I wanted at P85, so that was another reason for building my own 900. If you go factory 9R then you have the P22 and could / may want to change that??? Tons of options to try but if you looking at either of these platforms, I don't think you would be disappointed.

I'm actually anxious to get mine out after all the latest mods and run it, as one of my riding buddies just got a boost. I considered a boost as well, but I "think" the 9R setup is probably a better "all around" package, but who knows ...............Maybe I ride that boost and this all starts over, LOL !!!

After riding a Boost for 3 days it really set in that the added weight & power was more than I needed. I decided to get a 9R & add parts that dropped weight. In the end I usually run out of talent before power anyway.
I basically had the same experience as well. It is rad to have your arms stretched out by the turbo on the big end but I found the 9R is more of what I need! I’m doing the same thing dropping weight on the 9R. As you mentioned in the end, I usually run out of talent before power anyways.
Right now I have the diamond S titanium can, mountain fit aftermarket hood and will be doing the Carls Cerakoted pipe . I think that should be around 23 or 24 lbs weight loss. I will probably waste a bunch of money on titanium bolts as well. The alternative impact spindles seem intriguing as well, I believe they lose some weight as well.
I recently went through a divorce and have lost a bunch of weight so I have that covered when anyone wants to ask for me to drop some weight as well. Haha 🤣

FatDogX Looks like you seal up the belly pan exhaust outlet with silicone? Does that work well?

SLP sends that pinkish colored silicone gasket / ring that goes around the outlet of the silencer but those never really stay in place, so there is some high temp silicone to seal and hold the SLP one in place. I hope that makes sense.......

Alright,

Little update on the project..........

Skinz Helium installed / changed from the grey hood to a blue. Originally I planned for a Carbon Pursuit headlight delete but then did the hood.
NOTE --- The Carbon Pursuit headlight delete is listed for sale and it's brand new.
Arctic FX wrap pieces installed.
Titanium clutch goodies on order!!

Also added a better pic of the cerakoted pipe from Carl's Cycle.

Now, I just have to get released from light duty, due to a surgery, which should be soon and then it's west bound!!

I’m debating switching to a 9R for next yr. Haven’t decided if I want to get a 850 and build a 900 or just buy a 9R and replace clutches. What was your rough cost for the 900bb kit, pipe, clutching and tune?
