For sleds ridden primarily in the mountains, how many engine hours are typical on a Cat 800 H.O. before it needs a top end job.

Just some numbers to fun with, we see about 1600-1700 miles to 100 hours and on the Zuki I like to change them around 3500 to 4000 miles. This will give you 200-250 hours.

I figure hours would be a better way to measure vs miles because IIRC, my sled has approx 4800 miles and 340 hours, which is 14mph average.

As computerized as sleds are these days, it would be nice if they would track the number of engine revolutions which would be an even better indicator of how much wear there might be.

Most likely the best way to measure is pounds of fuel burnt like a diesel eng does. I am not sure if that info is available in the ecm or not? Miles and hrs are a pretty loose guideline example 2000 mountain miles and 2000 trail miles. The trail hrs should be less but that still doesn't account for the load factor which will be a lot higher for the mountain hrs. Personally i rely on compression and leak down tests.

I've done mine about every 2k miles, and they never really 'needed' it.

3000 short trail, mountain miles, she’s getting new pistons this fall regardless. Compression and leak down test don’t tell you about possibly already cracking piston skirts from wear and hard miles. Some engines I wouldn’t let hit 3000, but the zuke has proven itself over the years
