I was looking at the Polaris gearing chart and it tells me that a 19:41 gearing is not recommended for my sled 98 700 RMK. I have read about other's using this setup, but maybe a different chain case? Is there another setup to use instead?

19-40 or 18-41. 2.10-1 or 2.27-1.

I run the 18-41 in my 00' 700 144 with excellent results. With this much of a drop in gearing you will need to add some helix. I run a HSP 36S which is a 1/2 progressive 48-36 with otherwise same stuff in the front clutch as B4 the gear drop.
 
Recommendations are all about the chain case and dimensionally what gears and corresponding chain will work and not bind and or be too loose. In a 98, you better double-check to see that a 42 will fit.

I also ran 19/41 in my 01 and 19/42 in my 04. So... a ratio of 2.15 and 2.21 respectively. Anywhere in that range will get you what you need.

An 18 top seems to get mixed reviews. Some say that it is inefficent making too tight of a circle around the top. It certainly lowers your gearing. I havent heard of any problems, its just all theroy.

Generally, run the two largest gears that you can that still will suit your gearing ratio.
 
the escape and 03 and newer rmk have the newer chain case and can run a 19/43 or 19/41. But I have the older 02 chain case and it creates too much dogleg for my likings. I think the adjuster is located higher up the chaincase which doesnt create such a dogleg issue with the newer chain case.
 
Snowmobile clutches are most efficient at a 1-1 ratio. A 2.27-1 ratio is good for 80 mph @ 8000 RPM according to Polaris in "overdrive" so a 1-1 ratio with this gear ratio is closer to say 70 ish? Point is you want to be pulling all the efficiency you can out of the clutches considering we lose app 50% of our HP from the motor to the track.

Gearing applications depend on each specific machine/motor/track/riding combination and user preferance.

I have shared my preferance, some may disagree but they are not riding my sled and have no idea how well it does or doesn't work:)
 
In a 98, you better double-check to see that a 42 will fit.

I'm running 20-43 (70p chain) on my 97 700rmk (same chaincase as 98).

With the 43t lower gear the chain nearly touches the rubber gasket but doesn't damage it, very tight fit anyways.

So, a 42t won't be a problem at all.
 
General rule if you drop a tooth on the top you should add a tooth to the bottom to keep your chain tensioner about the same.
