Nytro MTX weight loss per pound list

I posted this on a different site and a few guys asked me to post it here too>>

This weekend a new owner of a stock 2009 Nytro MTX was asking me about the changes I've made to my sled (2008 40th Anniversary).

He wanted to know the cost of my weight reductions on a dollar-per-pound basis. I hadn’t really thought of it that way so I went home and figured it out. Some of the results kind of surprised me.

Since I was already looking into this I did some fast research and found some additional products, weight savings, and costs for him to consider.

Perhaps some of you who are thinking about new modifications would be interested in this.

Here’s the list so far. Please don’t beat me up on costs listed – I don’t have time to comparison shop so the costs should be considered average prices.

The lists does not consider performance benefits, product quality, reliability, manufacture’s service record… Just price and diet success.

So far I have reduced my sled weight by 78.5 lbs and would like to shave some more bulk off this summer.

I know that there are a lot of other great products out there. It would be great if others could add to this list:

Timbersled Barkbuster front end = 9 lbs @ $950 = $105.55 per pound

West Coast front end kit = 9lbs @ $799 = $88.77 per pound

CR Racing A-arms = 8lbs @ $750 = $93.75 per pound

Fox Float2 front shocks = 6 lbs @ $695 = $115.83 per pound

Skinz SuperQ Exhaust (+3-4hp) = 7.5 lbs @ $249.00 = $33.20 per pound

Skinz UltraQ Exhaust (+3-4hp) = 7.5 lbs @ $289.00 = $38.53 per pound

Ulmer Racing Exhaust (+8hp) = 8lbs @ $850 = $106.00 per pound

Schmidt Bros. Exhaust (+4-6hp) = 7lbs @ $699 = $100.00 per pound

CR Racing Dump Kit exhaust = 7lbs @ $300 = $42.86 per pound

MPI Exhaust = 11lbs @ $319 = $29.00 per pound

Timbersled Mtn. Tamer suspension = 30 lbs @ $1,550 = $51.66 per pound

Timbersled drop brackets = 8 lbs @ $150 = $18.75 per pound

CR Racing drop brackets = 6lbs @ $140 = $23.33 per pound

Sway bar delete (2008 – 2009 MTX apx.) = 3 lbs @ no cost

Yuasa YTZ10S battery = 10lbs @ $135 = 13.50 per pound

Yuasa YTZ7S battery = 12lbs @ $135 = $11.25 per pound

Diamond S tunnel = 22lbs @ $ ? = $ ? per pound

Diamond S has a chromoly front subframe they claim saves 6lbs, dont know price. Parking brake is a free 1lb. Skinz seat is about 5lbs lighter, $500. If you are a minamalist, reverse delete is worth 9lbs.

Excellent post!
Diamond S tunnel 22 lbs @ $3500 = $159 per pound
Headlight Removal 2 lbs @ no cost
Titanium street bike exhaust(ebay) 14 lbs @ $200 = 14.28 per pound

The stock seat is 8.5 lbs, is the skinz seat really 3.5 lbs??

I have one on the shelf, I will weigh it thursday. I think if you count the stock seat mount that you can't use with the skinz it saves 5lbs.

Stock seat is 8.5 pounds
Heat shield (under seat is 2 pounds)

Skinz seat with frame is 5.5 pounds.

So you save 5 pounds. So 100 dollars per pound.

good list but

This is very valuable information for lightening the load of the nytro, but I have to ask, how are you running 4 different exhaust systems at the same time? JK...:face-icon-small-ton

Funny - just running one exhaust.

This a list of various products on the market (US). I was hoping that being able to see the different products and the weight savings may help people make informed decisions.

There is a more recent (updated) list that I posted a few weeks ago.

If you know of items that should be added let me know.

If you go to Google or Bing you can do a search on "ported tracks snowmobile". You will get a good sample of what's out there from the listings.

It sounds like porting removes 2 - 3 lbs of rubber from the track. Claims of 35 - 50 lbs less snow in the track during deep snow operation.

I'm no expert but I would advise that you spend some time checking into the upside vs. downside of porting.

From what I understand, Ski Doo Summit tracks used to come ported from the factory. This year they went away from this. Apparently the drawbacks exceeded the benefits.

I never considered track porting a weigh saving measure even if you get a pound or two out of it. I have a 1-2 pattern ported into the center my CE to clear snow but more to make the track more pliable and turn better. The 2.5" CE's are stiff.

2008 and 2009 153" Nytro weight is something like 553 lbs DRY. I've seen a lot of different numbers published but this seems to be about right.

2010 153" SE is about 30 lbs less (523?). I am pretty sure that the 2011 model is the same.

- American Snowmobiler lists the 162" SE (wet) at 610.
- SnowGoer lists the 153 SE (ready to ride - fluids, but no fuel) at 563 lbs.

Here is an updated list of weight saving solutions:

Timbersled Barkbuster front end = -9 lbs @ $950 = $105.55 per pound

West Coast Sleds front end kit = -9 lbs @ $799 = $88.77 per pound

CR Racing A-arms = -8 lbs @ $750 = $93.75 per pound

Alternative Impact Titanium A-arms = 9.9 lbs @ $850 = $85.86 per pound

Alternative Impact Cro-moly A-arms = 8 lbs @ $450 = $56.25 per pound

Fox Float2 front shocks = -6 lbs @ $695 = $115.83 per pound

Sway bar delete (2008 – 2009 MTX) = -3.5 lbs @ no cost

Diamond S Chromoly sub frame = -6lbs @ $? = $ ? per pound

Skinz SuperQ Exhaust (+ 3-4hp) = -7.5 lbs @ $249.00 = $33.20 per pound

Skinz UltraQ Exhaust (+ 3-4hp) = -7.5 lbs @ $289.00 = $38.53 per pound

Ulmer Racing Exhaust + Header (+ 8hp) = -8 lbs @ $850 = $106.00 per pound

Hartman Exhaust (+ 3-4hp) = -7.5 lbs @ $255.00 = $34.00 per pound

Schmidt Bros. Exhaust (4-6hp increase) = -7 lbs @ $699 = $100.00 per pound

CR Racing Dump Kit exhaust = -7 lbs @ $300 = $42.86 per pound

MPI Exhaust = -11 lbs @ $319 = $29.00 per pound

MBRP Exhaust = -10 lbs (+2hp) @$250 = $25.00 per pound

Aaen Mega Power Silencer = -7 lbs (+6hp) @ $425 = $60.71 per pound

Excell Motorsports Exhaust = -8 lbs @ $849 = $106.12 per pound

Timbersled Mtn. Tamer rear suspension = -30 lbs @ $1,550 = $51.66 per pound

Timbersled drop brackets = -8 lbs @ $150 = $18.75 per pound

Hartman Air Rear Suspension = -23.5 lbs @ $2,600 = $110.64 per pound

K Mod Gen II mountain suspension = -30 lbs @ $1695 = $56.00 per pound

K Mod drop brackets = -5 lbs @ $149 = $30 per pound

CR Racing drop brackets = -6 lbs @ $140 = $23.33 per pound

Jenny Craig Diet plan (apx) = -1.5 lbs @ $155 = $72.50 per pound

Yuasa YTZ10S battery = -10 lbs @ $135 = 13.50 per pound

Yuasa YTZ7S battery = -12 lbs @ $135 = $11.25 per pound

Skinz seat = -5 lbs @ $500 = $100 per pound

BRtech lexan hood = -0.5 lbs @ $175 = $87.50 per pound

Parking brake delete (apx) = -1 lb @ no cost

Foam removal (apx - foam + ice build up) = -3 lbs @ no cost

Diamond S tunnel = -22 lbs @ $ ? = $ per pound

CR Racing tunnel = -22lbs @ $1,760 = $77 per pound

Skinz Tunnel Conversion (2008-2009) = -2 lbs @ $299 = $150 per pound

Hartman Tunnel Conversion (2008-2009) = -2 lbs @ $200 = $100 per pound

Snow Eliminators, Better Boards… can also eliminate a lot of RIDING weight by reducing snow build-up. These products are reasonably priced and they make a big difference, especially on 2008 – 2009 models.

http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189909

Spent the last couple of hours at Rexburg Motor Sports where they were kind enough to take a new 2010 Yamaha FX Nytro MTX SE 162 and put it on the scale for us.

With all required fluids and a shipping allotment of fuel (appx. 2-3 Gallons from the factory) the sled has a TRUE WEIGHT of 578lbs

If we subtract out 2 gallons (6.4 x 2 = 12.8lbs), we have 564lbs

If we subtract our 3 gallons (6.4 x 3 = 19.2lbs), we have 558lbs

Their guess was that we had just over 2 gallons in the tank, and they were not able to siphon it out without tearing down the sled.

So...
That gives us a pretty honest real world weight of 560 pounds!

Thanks Christopher.

For comparison sake ("true weight" = fluids but no fuel):

- Arctic Cat M8 155 Sno Pro = 478
- Polaris RMK Assault = 505
- Ski Doo Renegade 800R Backcountry Renegade = 464

These figures come from SnowGoer. They didn't have the weights of the RMK Dragon or the Summits.
