Looking for advice on PSI GENESIS III engine for 97 rmk 700

I'm new here and generally new to sledding. I'm seeking a workhorse sled for backcountry splitboarding access.

I'm currently looking at buying a 97 rmk 700 with track/suspension/engine/gauges upgrades. It has a PSI GENESIS III engine swapped in it and I'm wondering if anyone here has any knowledge on those engines.

Thanks in advance!

A PSI engine was an aftermarket higher performance engine. It is pushing the parts for more hp and performance. Wasn't meant to be a workhorse but more of a thoroughbred. Parts are going to be very hard to get as I don't think they are in business anymore. Bruce Kalhammer kept a tight rein on production of the parts and motors.
You can check but I'm pretty sure he quit producing them years ago. (Might be wrong but that was the last I heard)

Reliability was not what those motors were meant for. High horsepower and performance were what they were made for.
It is not what I would be looking for if I wanted a workhorse sled.
A stocker with readily available parts and known reliability would be more appealing for a Backcountry workhorse but that's just me.

thanks for the insight! well here's the deal: I have a stock 97 rmk 700 that wrecked last year when my throttle cable got stuck open while loading it onto my truck, literally sending it into a brick wall. the chassis is bent metal but still a ton of good parts on her including the engine which was miraculously untouched. that being said , I have a parts sled.
I was thinking since this 700 with the psi is listed for $2500 obo, even if the engine **** the bed, I have my old one to fall back on.

Not sure where you live, but there should be some much newer sleds around for that price. There should be Cats, Poos or Doos that are 2013s and older for that price. Like Turbolover said that motor is built for a good time not a long time unless you like headaches and to pull wrenches I would stay away from it. I have an old PSI myself and it is just a pain thrying to source anything for it

Jump up a few years on all makes and you’ll gain a lot of advances in clutching, suspension, reverse, etc. and not a lot more money.

That would be a decent sled, but probably due for a set of pistons if it has not had them already. History and riding style of owner would be good to know, but usually in a lower buck sled you don't get a lot of history. If you do, bonus...

DONT buy a sled with a 925 ,990,1050,or 1200 PSI motor the motors suck fuel like no shortage at all and .10 cent a gallon prices .
Mine got 4-6 at best pistons if you could find them were 250.00 each

Everyone is correct. That sled probably needs race gas also? I part out a LOT of 04-07 Summits that are equipped with ski/board racks. And mileage aside, you won't be putting a ton of miles on it for what you are doing.

Thanks for the info. I have a stock 97 rmk engine that I was thinking I could swap out om it and get rid of the psi. is that a realistic thought? on the other hand there's this 04 skidoo summit highmark that needs a top end for cheap.....

Possibly one of the few out there that could be even less reliable lol. If it's a 1000 then HARD NO and often the 800 revs (although great sleds) have been ran into the dirt and back 3 times. Back to your sled you already have, Not everyone had their psi engines tuned to burn up every other ride. Pwd where ya located? I have a 97 as well as several older and newer chassis sleds all in that vintage. I have a spare freshly rebuilt and rtr 700 bb non ves with twin slp hillx pipes, tunnel dump, 220 jugs Ducati ignition (gen 2 polaris). Arctic cat secondary conversion WITH the correct clutching for that set up in a wedge or gen chassis 7000-9000ft

I'd trade ya my set up for that psi if ya get it. Also have quite a LOT of other vintage polaris parts and even more NEW parts. My angle is purely to recreate my uncles 97 ultra from back when I was a child. First anything I ever experienced that I could FEEL the sound of in my chest. He had every psi part in the SNOWEST mag. All the psi adds were like porn back then. Just glistening purple anodizing and $amounts that still are absurd even today lol Fond memories from my point of view atleast. LOL. I'm in sw mt and restoring a 96 xlt rmk as well as building a resto-mod 97 ultra for vintage hill climb racing. Pm me if you like, I do however concure with everyone else. NOT the engine you want for a work horse, although it COULD be set up to do so. You ideally want something with power valves.

The best way to make up for lack of torque is low gearing.

Sure whish I could easily gear my 15 600 rmk to 2.6 or so to 1 but NO everyone wants a belt drive ? lol

yes the high mark is an 800 with 3300 miles on it and the seller saying that it needs a top end. I'm enticed by a sled with reverse for a change......

However, the rmk with the psi in it has a bunch of other upgrades and looks super clean. If I did get it in the interest of swapping for my stock 700 engine, what would that process be like? is there anything that gets modified for the psi that would make swapping back to a stock engine hard? I'm thinking it could be a good deal if the swap isn't too hellacious.

I'm located in North Idaho. I'm always down for wheelin and dealin just tryin to get a sled that will get me into the backcountry this season. I appreciate the insight too!

Fancy visiting Yellowstone? I'm in gardiner and having the 2022 sled build safety meeting tonight ... it's more for organized chaos ... not occupational or public safety.
