Yeah, the forest service doesn't even know its own regulations anymore. They just publlished a new Over the Snow Vehicle & X-C skiing map for Gallatin National Forest. The map shows a marked snowmobile trail going up Hyalite Canyon (the road has been open to everything for years), but certain rangers will turn you around or ticket you if they catch you riding up there. It doesn't matter that their map is only 3 weeks old, if a ranger doesn't want you up there, they'll make you leave. Try fighting that ticket in court against the USFS.

With the right documentation you could win your case against the FS. If the map is only 3 weeks old that is a solid start for winning. FS is tough to deal with sometimes but nobody is bullet proof.

I think you can snowmobile on the road only, to the emerald lake and Hyalite lake trail heads and that is it! It's BULL SH!T

What skidoocam said is the truth! Road is open to sleds, no plowing this winter due to the mudslide from this spring that is STILL blocking the road. Hyalite lake trail and Emerald lake are both closed, although Hyalite lake trail is open to sleds up to Grotto Falls (1 mi.). This is for ice climbing access as there is no decent sledding near the falls.

not worth going in there anyway, there is no base at all, and only like 3-4 feet of snow, which if you are off trail (which is all I care about) you will be spitting rocks out behind you...

wait to head into Lionshead, they have not been getting enough pow for fun riding...
