Curious if anyone else had seen the article bout the land south of cascade idaho that was sold to the wilks brothers out of texas? Something like 178,000 acres? Anyone have a map of where the property is?

These the same guys that bought about that much land by Lewistown, Montana?

Ya. They have been buying land all over the area.

That sucks to hear but it is private land. Just be glad that they are conservatives and not a bunch of liberals like ted Turner. I have done work for both Dan and Pharris.

I guess we'll see what they do with the leases to both log and groom. I'm sure there will be some increases involved.

That is encouraging to hear. Maybe they will keep it open to sledding. Conservatives usually understand the "our tracks don't last" concept.

They don't let hunters in, that's for sure.
They blocked public off land to the Durfee Hills by Lewistown. It's all land locked and they have a GIANT private hunting preserve to themselves with thousands of elk in there.
It's been a HUGE issue...involving legals!!

It sucks but that is the American way. Everyone that gripes about it would do the same thing if they could. You would lock it down to you and a few of your buds. Dont try and kid anyone. Hunting has kind of turned into a Rich persons game. I get tired of hearing about someone's big bull because it usually boils down to hunting somewhere others can't. I don't despise people because they have money. Yes they have opportunities that most will never see but these guys started at the bottom as masons. A little luck and hard work got them where they are. One other thing that most don't know is they were flying wounded warriors in to shoot cows at their expense. That is pretty cool imo.

Id really just like to see where the land that they bought is. There are more ways to the back country than going through their land.

I used to plant trees, mark timber and thin some of those lands. Access is definitely going to be limited as there are not a lot of alternate roads to get to the public lands.

They may follow suit with other large private landowners and sell access permits.

Possible Trail Access Restrictions

The local Groomer Coordinator has been in contact with the new property owners and discussions have been taking place. There may be some issues this winter as it takes time to work through some of these things but at least there have been conversations. There is hope that access through the areas of concern can be negotiated and remain open. It just goes to show that "we" should always be good neighbors and "we" have to be good stewards of the lands that we ride. There is a push to identify similar issues so that they can be addressed now and avoid similar situations.

It used to be Boise Cascade 20 years ago. They cut their lands down to the point they couldn't support their mills. Mills closed, land sold. There was an intermediate owner I believe, then Potlatch bought it. They don't have mills in the area and likely realized that 10ft^3/stick of timber wouldn't support anything so they found another buyer.

Sorry to see this happen. I was also not in favor of the West Mountain ski resort as I knew they were simply getting it rolling to bail out the previous investors. That was a Ponzi scheme waiting to implode. Now they have scarred up the community and the landscape just so some players could be made whole.

Hopefully access can be granted.

You mean tamarack? It doenst look like much of the area they bought is prime snowmobile area. The area around smiths ferry kinda sucks to lose tho

Further coverage...

Local TV finally picked up the story...

From the article...."Larry Laxon is the director of Valley County Parks and Recreation. He says there have been a lot of rumors, but says the truth is most snowmobile trails won't be affected.

"It isn't going to affect snowmobiling, I've got three small roads that it might affect but we'll just pick another road to groom," said Laxon."

We really need to know about Smith's Ferry though....
