I'm thinking of getting an 02 KTM 520sx to use as a dirt bike in the summer and snow bike in the winter. But I have been told you really need a fuel injected bike in the winter to deal with the elevation changes and high alpine in colorado, is that true? I have a lot of experience with sleds and dirt bikes but not snow bikes. I don't need the latest and greatest but something capable, defiantly would be boon docking and not trail riding. Probably 8000-1200 feet.

If you're jetting is perfect at eight thousand feet it will run just fine up higher but you will probably lose an extra 2 horsepower more then the EFI bike will lose at 12 k but it's probably irrelevant to worry about what you lose from altitude compensation when the new bikes already have 10 more horsepower to begin with. You will have to spend a lot of money on the 520 to get to 60 horsepower. It will probably start pretty good in the cold and be a nice starter bike for your first season. It will do the job. I ride 50hp bikes, at 12k they only have 35hp and still have more fun than a 150hp sled. I would not want to ride a 520 SX on single track in the summer though.
