Budget price for top end rebuild?

Merry Xmas all,

My buddy is looking for a sled for this winter.
He's very concerned with finding a good deal on a sled. Like VERY concerned about it. My thoughts are, find a low mileage 800 and run the tits off it without having to worry about whether it will start or reliability issues.

He found a 14 163 w/ 1800 miles that needs a new top end for about 4500. He's wondering if it's worth getting it rebuilt. Idk about how much should be spent on that kind of work - in parts and labor...

Any ideas from past experiences?
Thanks,
~BC

If he / you do the labor yourself, that is a decent deal in this market. Even OEM pistons (if someone has them) will run about 500 a pair, maybe another 200-300 in misc. parts, and away you go... IMHO of course. Been a little while since I have done one. But I think a preventive top end is in my near future too...
