Best way to tow snowmobile?

This one gagged on us at intersection N on the Grand Lake trails. You can see we just pushed the rear of the tow sled down and tied the ski tight to the rear bumper and away we went. Probably 35 miles back to the trail head and not the best terrain to go through >>>>.

Just brought mine out this weekend. Snow conditions will make a difference. Tried the reverse ski's and setting azz end on the azz end of the tow sled. All that did was sink the tow sled deeper in the bottomless. The only way we got anywhere was to use a buddy tow pro on the track. On 2 steep uphill's we had to strap a big pully to a tree (in one case a sunk in sled as anchor) and hook a rope to the dead sled with the other end to a live sled that could head down hill. It would climb the dead one right up the hill on that tow buddy.

Caution - don't use the tow buddy on any kind of a down hill. Let the track run as it will hold the sled back some.

best way I have seen when back in the steep and deep is to pull the ski's.turn them around backwards..undo the rear torsion springs and set the track on the back of the towing snowmachine..strap the track to the rear bumper and go..with the weight on the back and only dragging ski's it will go darn good..by collapsing the rear suspension on the towed sled it gets the load lower.....

If it is in a real bad hole, fix it there. The pulley deal works really well. Two sleds in tandem pulling works pretty good also on less steep stuff.

Take parts in if possible. I've seen many a damaged sled when trying to get it out of the backcountry (including mine). I've heard of guys swapping engines in the woods.

Here's one I've been thinking about, take an old bedliner, cut out a section long enough to tie to the track, heat up the front edge with a bottle torch and bend it up so it rides up on the snow, after you bend it hold it in position and have someone spray it with cold water, it will then stay in that position, keep it in your rig and if you need to use it tie-wrap it to the track, the grooves in the bedliner should keep the towed sled from fish-tailing around corners.

What is the best way to tow out a broken sled, it will be climing up hills. Anyone ever tow the broken sled backwards? Thanks.

Being the only Skidoo in my group I have towed out alot of sleds.;)

The tow buddy works awesome. A tarp can do pretty well also.
Once you get it out of the hills, the Ski tied to the bumper works great,
keeps the sled close enough to the tow sled so that the front doesn't get filled in with snow.

If you need more then one sled to pull it up a hill, use the train method so that only one sled is tied to the sled being towed. If you tie a sled to each ski you could end up with a wishbone effect.:o

Moving on....

Theres a product out there for towing sleds out called the BuddyTow.com

Not a bad price and it rolls up enough to throw in your pack even.

They say with the thing attached a person can pull their sled by hand with a little effort.

Thumbs up on this product:face-icon-small-hap

I don't know how old some of you are, but as a kid we had the plastic roll up sleds. Same thing as a tow buddie, but they are much cheaper. Saw them at Wal-Mart for about $5.00. A couple of small bungie cords and you are in business. Most will tell you if you tow a sled, remove the belt to reduce the resistance. If using the tow buddie method, leave the belt on, and probably set the brake to keep the tow buddie on the bottom. I like to tie the ski or bumper tight to the towing sled.

All bets are off if you're in deep powder. Try to get back on a set of tracks and tie
it up tight right behind the towing sled. If it's ofset by only tying up 1 ski, you will probably drop the whole works back into the powder.
