Been a Doo guy for forever but just picked up a 2000 Mountain Max 700.

I have pulled the seat, tank and airbox.Cleaned all and reinstalled. The tank had water and rust from the filter. The airbox had dirt, oil sludge at the bottom.Am cleaning chain case now.Read about changing reeds which I plan to do since I run Boyesen power reeds in my Summit 600.Can I remove the divider plate in air box or drill the holes?Any tips from a fellow Yamaha rider to make this sled as good as it can be?It does have an extension kit and new 151 Camoplast track. It also has Simmons Flexi-skis.Thanks for any advice!Have a great day and pray for deep powder this winter.

If i remember correctly drilling holes in the plate was the thing to do vs removing it. Another mod was to remove a layer or 2 from the head gasket. It's a multi layer head gasket so if I remember correctly you could drill out the rivets that hold the layers together and just run 1 of the layers and keep the other as a spare. You will have to rejet after these mods.

A friend picked up a 99 MM 700 a few years back for a backup sled. We changed reeds on his--first go round he had Boyesen and the petals didn't seat well against the cage. Returned those and bought VFORCE3 reeds--quality seemed much better on those, and they really seem to have woken that 700 triple up. They were a noticeable upgrade over what was in it.

It's a greasy triple that sounds great!!! It's the new cool thing to have!! I've been looking for a decent 1 for awhile now.
Not sure on your location (MN?) but here's a few I've come across that look pretty nice and reasonably priced:

MM:

Viper:

I also have another friend in Montana with either an 03 or 04 Viper that's talked about selling. It's red like the one above in Dickinson. Not sure on miles on it (I know it's lower) or what he'd want for it.

My first real mountain sled way back when was a MM700. Or at least I thought it was a real mountain sled at the time. Had several Mountain Max’s after that, then bought an XP in 2008 and never looked back.

8 or 9 years ago I bought an ‘03 Viper 700 that was nice enough that it belonged in a sled museum, I just wanted an extra sled that I could ride around locally on. I was quickly reminded of how wide they are, how heavy they are, that they don’t have reverse, and they don’t have the right geometry to carve like a modern sled. So I found it a new home. I probably should have kept it and put it in a glass box up on the shop mezzanine. Neat to look at but I really didn’t enjoy riding it.

I've still got my 2000 mountain max 700, all stock, I bought new in 2000, sitting out back, on a 2 place trailer, with a cover and tarp over it. Got like 3200 miles on it. Was a spare sled for years, until my modded Timbersled M7 took its place, in the enclosed trailer.

And those are the exact reasons I don't own one for a backup sled. I've taken both of my friend's Mountain Max and Viper out for a spin, and I just don't care for the heavy, planted feeling they have. Yeah, they can be had cheap, but to me they are not fun to ride off trail.

Thanks I've seen a couple of those adds but I'm looking for a 01 - 02 mm 700 stock lower miles and in good shape. No vipers.

Weve had a mountain max around for 13 or so years. Still rides better than my rev down the trail and is so much easier to side hill. Once set up correctly they will hold that hillside for miles. They are great sleds than can easily go 5000+ miles on a bottom end. No way a Doo is lasting that long.

Yeah I rode a Mt max for years. It had well over 5k miles of running Walmart oil when I sold it. I never did any motor work, the only time I even opened up the carbs was when I moved to a significantly different elevation.
I had no idea how good it really handled until I 'upgraded' through every other brand.... and now I have another old mountain max. Weight is the main downside.

The best 'bang for the buck' mods I did mine were swapping to a modern (at the time) skid, wider (apex) skis and moving the shock mounts to raise the front end to reduce submarining.
