Morning from Cooke city. Again this morning we will see sunny skies. No snow in the forecast until next Tuesday. It hasn't been a good winter for most of the areas.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Collapsing and cracking are evidence that our weight is initiating and propagating fractures on this layer and is bulls-eye information that the slope is unstable. There is no need to dig; cracking and collapsing are free stability tests. For today, avalanches are still possible and the danger is rated MODERATE.

Morning from Cooke city. The snowman has changed his mind again. We know could see snow moving in next Thusday for 5 days. So that means we will have sunny skies till then.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: An additional problem today will be loose wet avalanches on steep, sun exposed slopes. Watch for roller balls or small point releases and move to shadier aspects if these signs are present.

Stability is improving, but human triggered avalanches remain possible and the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

The snow is getting a little bit better, but you still have to watch out for the pillows of snow. Yes they are hiding the rocks you could hit.

Its a great morning in Cooke city. We still have lots of sun shine to soak up. :sun:That's going to last for four more days. The snowman as increased the chance of snow for Thursday and Friday up to a 70% chance. Keep up the snow dance. :spider:

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Stability is improving but not perfect in the northern mountains and Cooke City area. The weakest snow can be found in areas where the snowpack is less than 3’ deep (video, video). Before committing to avalanche terrain, put your shovel in the snow and do a quick stability test to assess the snowpack structure.

Today it may be possible to trigger avalanches in steep terrain on slopes with buried weak layers. For this reason the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

Morning from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8.

I'm hoping the snowman is right about the snow coming in for next week. We sure could use about 2 feet to fall on us to save the winter. This is the second lowest snow fall at this time for 20 years. We have to dance 24 hours a day for a week to maybe help us out. So guys, lets start the New Years off right and get out and help us dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS:In the mountains near Bozeman, Big Sky and Cooke City it is possible to trigger avalanches that break 1-2’ deep on layers of weak, sugary facets. On Friday, on the south face of Mt. Abundance near Cooke City a snowmobiler triggered an avalanche 1-2' deep and large enough to bury a person.
Not all slopes have an unstable and weak snowpack structure. Some are stronger and some are entirely weak, yet stable without a cohesive slab on top. The weakest snow is found where the snowpack is less than 3’ deep. Carefully assess the snowpack and consequences of a slide before riding steep slopes. Today, buried weak layers make avalanches possible to trigger and avalanche danger is MODERATE.

Morning from Cooke city. The only thing that has changed is more chances of snow from tomorrow till Saturday. Then we will see a break for one day and snow moves back into the picture. The snowman has called out in his report that Cooke city should see snow. No amount has been posted yet. Keep up the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: It’s been two weeks since the last significant snowfall in the northern ranges. Without a new load, stability has slowly improved and triggering an avalanche has become unlikely. This doesn’t mean that you couldn’t find a pocket of unstable snow out there somewhere, just that those areas are becoming fewer and farther between.
The avalanche danger is LOW.

Morning from Cooke City. Well the snowman is keeping his word for snow. We could see a couple of inches tonight and 4-5 inches tomorrow. We have a chance of snow for 8 days straight. Let's not stop the snow dance yet. The more we dance the more of a percentage we have for snow.

Good afternoon from Cooke city. At this time we have picked up a couple of inches and it's still snowing. I would like to thank everyone that has helped with the snow dance. But we are not out of the woods yet. We need to keep up the heavy snow dancing for at least a couple more weeks.
The big storm will be hitting us Sunday. DANCE, DANCE, DANCE We can see SNOW for another 8 days.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: For today, avalanches are unlikely, but not impossible, and the danger is rated LOW.

The bakery is offering dinners for Friday and Saturday nights. It will begin at 5 pm and end at 7 pm. Terri say's if your tired of pizza and burgers. Join us for some HOME COOKING.

Evening from Cooke city. The snowman has given us snow. At this time you can find at least a foot of powder. So at this time we have a chance of snow for 5 more days. Saturday looks like the big one with about 7 inches coming for the mountains around Cooke. Keep dancing.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Signs of instability such as cracking and collapsing or recent avalanches are Mother Nature’s bull horn alerting you to unstable conditions. Today, a snowpack under stress makes human triggered avalanches likely and the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

Keep dancing

Morning from this busy little town. With the coming of fresh snow,it has brought in a few riders. Woke up to a light dusting over night. Just be careful to watch out for the pillows out on the mountains. It could be a rock. The better news is what the snowman has told me that the chance of snow is looking better. Storms are moving in for another 7 days. Lets hope our luck has changed. Don't stop dancing. That is what is bringing in the storms.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Non-wind loaded slopes are more stable, but still hold the potential to produce slides. Make sure and put the shovel in the snow to assess the snowpack structure before committing to avalanche terrain.

Today, dangerous avalanche conditions exist on wind loaded slopes which have a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have LOW avalanche danger.

Morning from Cooke. Thought I'd wake up to a foot of snow in town. NOT. The snowman disappointed me. He is still saying we should see 6-7 inches by tonight. Keep up the dance. The report coming in, is that the snow is over the hood. NICE

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: I visited Cooke City the last couple days to assess how the snowpack took the weight of 10-12” of new snow. The snowpack was generally strong where it is deeper than three feet, and the new snow was not yet unstable on shallower weak areas (less than 3’). This is good news, but more snow today and tonight will continue to test the strength of the snowpack. Avalanches are likely to be triggered where the new snow is drifted into thick slabs, and with more snow today avalanches may become easy to trigger on all steep slopes. Avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes and MODERATE on all other slopes. Danger may rise to CONSIDERABLE on all slopes with steady snowfall today.

Again the dinner was a great hit. Terri doubled the people from the night before. She asked me to thank every one that came.

Afternoon from Cooke city. Well it's been a long day. Just sat down to give everyone an up date. The snowman has put us in a winter storm watch. We could see from 10-15 inches by Thursday morning. We then have a chance of snow like every other day. Keep up the good work and keep dancing.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Yesterday, near Cooke City, Doug found that while the new snow has generally bonded well on non-wind loaded slopes, there are some slopes where it has not. Quickly check how the new snow has bonded to the old snow surface before getting into any steep terrain. While not widespread, on slopes with a shallower snowpack there is also the potential to trigger slides on deeper weak layers.

Steer clear of steep, wind loaded slopes where you are most likely to trigger an avalanche. The avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes and MODERATE on other slopes.

Morning from Bearclaw and Super 8. The snowman is doing a great job the last several days. This morning so far, we've picked up 3 inches. It started about 4 am. We are still in a winter storm watch until Thursday pm. Then a chance of snow for another 10 days.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Your homework for today is to remember three points:

1. The avalanche danger will rise as the snow continues to fall.

2. Shallow snowpacks consisting of weak facets should be avoided.

3. New snow will continue to avalanche on steep slopes, especially if it has been drifted by the wind.

For today, the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on all slopes and avalanche terrain should be avoided. Collapsing, cracking and recent avalanches are signs of instability and we’ve had all three in the last 24 hours. There will be more today.


Two deaths in avalanches.

On Monday, a backcountry skier was buried and killed in an avalanche near Aspen, Colorado. Information from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
On Friday, a skier was buried and killed in an avalanche in Utah. He and his partner were not wearing avalanche transceivers. Details from the Utah Avalanche Center.

Evening from Cooke city. It's been a long day of plowing. Started at 3 am and didn't finish until 5 pm. I just might to start over again in the morning. The snowman is calling for more snow tomorrow. We could see another 5 inches. For Saturday it will be partly cloudy and Sunday and Monday we could see more snow coming back in.
We picked up 12-14 inches yesterday. The report on the mountain is about 2.5 feet.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Triggering slides is likely today, especially near ridgelines or above treeline where wind-loading added even more weight to the snowpack. Dig and assess what is under your feet before getting close to avalanche terrain. Avalanches can be triggered from afar so be watchful of not being under steep slopes. For today, given the recent avalanche activity, new snow and wind, the danger throughout our advisory area is rated CONSIDERABLE.

After noon from Bearclaw and the Super 8 motel. It's been a busy 2 days. I had forgot how busy it can be when we have snow, since it's been awhile. The snowman is calling for a chance of snow for Sunday and Monday. Keep up the snow dance so we can pick up another couple of feet.

AVALANCHE CONDITION: The avalanche fatality in the Tobacco Roots yesterday is a somber reminder that dangerous avalanches remain likely in the backcountry. This is the eighth U.S. avalanche fatality during the month of January.

Today, dangerous avalanche conditions exist and the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.
