I've had my current AvengeIII since 2002. Never changed batteries. They began to poop out this season. It only turns on after I get r's up to bout 4500.

I've never had the side cap off.
It doesn't fog up ever.

Last weekend it quit altogether, even while sled is running
Took batteries out and tried to run it with engine started and it still won't run.

There was NO corrosion inside.

I know I have power to the unit. The wire is hot right to the unit.
Got new batteries in the mail. Gonna put em in.
BUT, is the unit working properly and will the unit charge the batteries?
Should it still have worked with batteries out? Is that a sign something is wrong in the unit?

My question is do the batteries need to be there to complete the circuit.

I've run the avenger II without batteries. Have to start the sled for the gauge to power up. Although you did post that you didn't see any corrosion inside I think there might be more than just batteries wrong with the gauge. EGT says unless you really want the batteries in the gauge to leave them out because leaking batteries are the leading cause of circuit board failures in the older avenger series gauges.

If you say they do run without batteries installed, then that might be a bad sign for me.
