Aem air/fuel gauge install

I just picked up a AEM wideband air/fuel gauge and i was wondering where the best place for the 02 sensor is iv heard 3 differnt places so far.And any other tips for installing the sensor.

What type of sled? Im looking at putting one on my M8.. Would like some ideas on placement also..

I have a 2006 M7 chassis with an Engine Tech 900 in it. The exhaust is all BMP single pipe. I installed the AEM as well and put the sensor right on the top side of the can to prevent any moisture from pooling in the sensor and it's worked great so far. It's quick responding and accurate, any changes I make on the fuel controller show up right away on the AEM.

Cheers;

AEM Install

My AEM A/F sensor was installed by the Arctic Cat dealership, they installed the sensor in the expansion chamber. They say to weld the bung in so the sensor is sitting 10 degrees up from horizontal so that the sensor does not get carboned up or get oil residue on it. Here is a pic of it on an old POS pipe.

What Harf said about welding the bung!! I don't think it matters as much as some say about where you mount the sensor in your exhaust system. I've had this sensor for 2 seasons and it's still working fine and I've mounted in the same location with my SLP twins into a single can and my BMP single pipe setup and I will mount it in the same spot when my Jaws twins show up. Like I said before it's accurate and fast. Lots of others on here have had good luck mounting elsewhere. Hope this helps.

the wiring was pretty simple the red 12 volt i hooked up to the red 12 volt dc wire on the fuel pump and the ground to the ground wire on the fuel pump

new question now that i have it installed what numbers should it be displaying and does anyone have any numbers for me to start with on the boondocker box

How did you wire power to the unit?

Same as what crhm1000 did except I grounded to the bulkhead. Pieguy the red wire coming out of the back of your fuel tank is the power wire to the fuel pump (just in case you didn't know).

Bottom end I run between 12-15%, mid is 12-14% and top is 12.5% (at 13% I'm right on the edge). The bottom and mid numbers are very erratic, especially when on and off the throttle lots. These numbers are for my sled, yours may be a bit different. I run a pure logic so can't help with controller numbers.

Be careful running the same ground for different things. Last winter a guy at the local Cat dealer brought his M8 in because he was getting some real crazy numbers on his EGT. Traced the problem to the EGT and his Boondocker fuel controller running the same ground. Separated the grounds and his EGT works fine.

Thanks i guess i will change my ground then should be able to ground it to the bulkhead should be fine?

I put mine in the can 10-12 inches from the end because I was told that if you put it in the pipe you can get inacurate readings due to the size of the chamber and the volume that the exhaust is passing it there, and if you put it to close to the end of the can it can pick up fresh air from atmosphere which will give inacurate lean readings. The only other thing I was warned of is if you get your power from the fuel pump supply, you could potentialy cause the fuel pump to have a power "bump" and lean out the engine and BOOM! I ran my 09 like this last winter and got great readings and no "BOOM" but I will admit I was more than a little nervous doing this, I will be putting on the 250 dollar rectifier this year if for nothing but a little peace of mind. Good luck, hope this helps.

I just installed an SLP full pipe kit on my 07 M8. Where would be a good spot to put my sensor? I was reading what everyone else had said about the can. But i dont think mine will work well there. I was thinking about placingit just before the bend into the can. Would this be a good spot? has anyone done this with the SLP pipe kit?
