98 powder special boggs out and dies

We've been trying to get my friends powder special going
We drained the old watery gas out and it was running good for a few miles. Then dies. It will start right up and idle but if you hit the throttle it dies almost instantly. If you really feather the throttle it will rev to about 4000 max and won't move. More than really feather it and it just dies. After we towed him back down it fired up and ran good again for a minute. Any ideas what we should be checking?

Is it a carbed sled or EFI? If it has carbs give them a good cleaning and replace the jets or clean them real well with a wire nozzle cleaner through the jet opening. I suggest replacing the fuel filter and checking the fuel line and screen inside the tank also.
