i asked this on general snowmobiling forums and got chewed. i have an oppertunity to buy a 91 prowler 440 for $500 runs good im told is there things i should look for. will i have durability issues in the future with it. will it be dependable it should be a good upgrade from a 340

There were several Prowler models for 91 and actually two different 440 engines used. One had a larger crank and I believe it was in the Prowler Special model. These 440's are fairly reliable and put out around 68 hp stock. The Ovation has around 37 hp. I've had an Ovation for my kids and still have a 94 Cougar that is very similar to the Prowler. In my eyes and both my children the 440 Cat is a much better sled than the Yamaha. If the Prowler has been well maintained then it should be a good sled for you with a little work.

Prowler is a great little sled. My wife's 90 Prowler sits in the barn and seldom used. She wont let me get rid of her pride and joy even tho she now rides a 03 MC600. I think the 91 standard had 34mm carbs and the Special had 36mm and was somewhat peppier. Keep the front axle bearing on the clutch side greased.
I put an 1 1/8 ? inch mountain track (from a 94 580 EXT ) on it and it really would climb.
