So I picked up my new 850 on Friday and asked about a set of spare plugs. Parts guy couldn't find any info on them. Did a little more research and "supposedly" they are $40 each and yet can't find any info on them. The owners manual actually states that the dealer should change them. Are they indexed? So my first question is, do these ever need to be changed? Has anyone with a new Doo picked up spare plugs? Really curious about this one as I'd hate to be in the back country and not have a spare set.

There is a NEW plug for the 850. I seem to burn the electrode off the end of the the plug( at least on all my past 800 Etecs, 5) in 800 - 1000 miles. Notice a small drop in RPM. New plugs back running right. Once old ones were checked for gap end up at .65-70 thousandths instead of 30.

Every rider will have different results.

I just know from my personal experience that "I" can't go more than 800-1000 on a set....

850 we shall see, but I've got a set just in case.

Special would not say that for sure. They still have to be Indexed, as before. But from the dealer, who "should be buying from BRP for pre-indexed plugs.

How ever they are a new part # from years past.

The part #415130154 and they should be $21CDN each.

I always carry spare plugs and have had to use the spare plugs. Not on my sleds but on other sleds that have had problems. The cold start issues of a few years ago fouled some of the plugs. There is also the chance of a plug, for whatever reason, just giving up the ghost. imho, it is a smart thing to do when travelling the far reaches of the wilderness.

i had one go bad on a 2014 summit etec 800 at 900 miles or so. fouled or failed, cant remember. it would barely run. i do remember changing them....which is a pain in the butt. ran fine after i changed them. Its a myth that etec plugs never need to be changed. but to each his own, if it makes you feel good to never replace them, so be it. just make sure you have a tow rope.

Thanks for all the replies! Haven't been on Doo for awhile and wasn't sure about the plugs. Owners manual doesn't really discuss it much in detail. Does anyone know of a good place to get them other than the dealer?

All etecs are indexed. Can't attest to the 850, but on the 800 and 600 etecs anyone could change them (with some common tools, patience, and a brain). Never is a long time and works both ways - I've never had a set last more than 1500 mi in an etec. It will start with a rough idle, change the plugs, and walla, perfect again. I always carry a set, and enough tools to get to them.

Buy from the dealer. Skidoo pays NKG to pre-index their plugs. Ones at Napa or some other place will not be pre-indexed.

I was shocked when looking at the engine on my 850. I was barely able to reach my arm in far enough to touch the plug wires after removing the hood. I can see why they don't include a plug wrench in the tool kit, you're not changing them on the mountain. I guess some things come with trade offs. In this case it better be sweet handling for changing plugs in warm conditions only.
