Neat sled! I grew up with one of these. My father bought a 74 Firebird 292 new. I ended up with the sled and restored it around 1990. I upgraded the motor to the 440 fan built for Chaparral. I raced it at local drag races in the stock class. The 340 Yamaha Enticers and 340 Merc Trail Twisters were my main competition. I moved to the Black Hills and trail rode it for a season. I finally had to sell it to upgrade to a sled with a better suspension and did not have a place to store it. I wish I had it back. They were very light, owners manual claimed 340lbs. I believe yours may be a 74. 74 was the only year the SSX had the liquid cooled motor. The 73 SSX used the 440 fan which was where I got the 440 to put in my Firebird. Also the 73 models used a para-rail suspension where the 74 used slide rail suspension. The 74 liquid cooled SSX had the burnt orange hood with the brown seat. The 73 SSX had the red hood with a black seat. How does it run with the 500 rotax? I do not know what the 500 Rotax puts out for HP but the 440 fan was rated at 40hp and the 440 liquid cooled was rated at 50hp. The 440 liquid Chaparral used was upgraded and used in the Rupp Nitro and Magnums. They were rated at 80-90hp. Did the stock Chaparral pipe work with the Rotax or did you have to mod it? The blue is definitely a different look (never though I would see a blue Chaparral). I like the ski widening extensions.

her chappy

its blue because thats the one that the misses rides,my 440 lc im going to build for me will be bright orange instead of burnt orange, goes real good with 65 hp 503 big fan-clutching is always tough when doing engine swaps like that, stock chappy torque tuned pipe reworked to fit 503 added another outlet to pipe for size diff-sounds awesome.got a 70 hp 440 lc ccw engine for the ssx-shoud be fun with you know all the mods that come along with building a custom sled,10'' high in rear,45'' wide-stretched front frame thru belly pan-handles to good but still on leafs-i have 10 of these-so i have parts for any chappy heads still out there-have an add on NH craigslist

I never seen the blue before?? They were always red like SD snowcops pic. I just started my project of my uncles old 1972 Polaris Charger, I might be asking a few of you guys some hints on stuff!

my own creation

its a custom blue and the decals are origanal stlye but redone by a buddy on vinyl-the whole sled ive built from chassis out so it has a bad *** and stout look, also so it rides and handles as well.
