Maybe, but I'd be worried more about the fuel mapping and running correctly mating that engine with the high output version ECU, and which exhaust would need to be run with it.

Yes, reverse would work, there are kits for early m’s utilizing new tech and reverse notch secondary. As said, bigger concerns are mapping, pipe.

07-09 engines were all same and the 09 had engine reverse. Cat waited till 09 when Doo's patent expired to enable the electronics. Hardware was already there.
Put the topend off your sled (if any good) on the 08 motor and no mapping issue. Crank is heavier so it may rev a hair slower. Pull the steel ring off clutch if it still has one to compensate a bit. I am going to do the same with an 09 motor I have that has a bad topend. I have a silly theory about the crank on a turbo application I want to try and I have spare 10-17 topends.
