I am having a new problem with my 05 900 rmk. It seems to load up and run real rich and it barely idles. It is stock except for SLP can and gutted airbox. It only idles at about 1000 rpm. When riding it will load up and it will only go to about 4500 or so at WOT. then if you pump the throttle it will eventually clean out and run good at about full throttle or a little under. But when you let off it will sometimes quit or it will barely idle. Also Reverse is not working any more either. It all happened around the same time.

No lights blink or flash to indicate DET or any other sensors. Also the compression checks out good. The plugs are very rich and look fouled, both look the same. Could this be a TPS issue, ECU, any ideas.

Thanks for any help

From your description...it does sound like what some of the guys have had. There have been several threads on the 900 TPS issues. Low or no idle and no reverse seem to be the classic symptoms

Either the wiring, connector, defective TPS or out of adjustment seems to be the fix.

I would assume that it was your TPS. But something you could try would be to check and see if your exhaust valves are sticking. I noticed that when i bought my sled used that when going from idle to WOT that the sled would fall flat on its face in alot of areas. So I called the previous owner and asked him if he had ever cleaned the exhuast valves and he responded with "exhuast valves? you mean the little snow deflector on the bottom? No, that should still be clean, with the exception of a few scratches I guess." I just laughed cause I knew the guy had no clue about the sled as a working piece of machinery. He just pulled the cord, and put gas and oil in it. So I cleaned them nice and shinny and it made a WORLD of difference. Sled was smoother running and had alot better throttle response. The way you say your sled sounds TPS failure is a good chance. Just thought I would throw another solution out there and see if it rang any bells for ya.
Good luck,
Nolan

Save yourself some greif!!!

Take the sled to your dealer and have tps checked!!
If it is out of alignment I wouldn't bother adjusting, it won't hold and will probably strand you somewhere. Spend the $130 and replace it. Get it set to .92 at idle, make sure they check the pigtail connections at the same time!! Might as well make sure the oil cable is good while your at it.
Pull and Go!!! :D

^^^he's right on the oil cable, bought a blown up 900 where the oil pump cable failed and the guy didn't even know it. The crank went CRACK. I'm going to beat a dead horse and agree with the TPS. Do you have a Multimeter?

Check previous threads there is all the info you need to set it yourself if you are so inclined. Check maintenence of ex valves etc. You may need dealer to check on "The wrench" Good luck..and let us know.

Thanks for the responses all. I pulled the valves out in Cooke when we were there this past weekend when I was there. I guess I will have to check the TPS. I have the service manual it mentions the TPS tester, can this be checked with just a multimeter, or do I need to make a TPS tester from the instructions on here that I saw in a forum at one time.

Thanks

You need both the meter and the 5 volt battery tool which simply is used to adjust the TPS. To test the TPS you need either a high end digital multimeter with the little grid deal at the bottom to watch for drop-outs and glitches or an old style analog meter with the needle and perform TPS sweep.

This worked for me. Set the TPS then the idle I have not stalled, bogged or anything. This thing runs like a bat outa hell! It will pretty much smoke anyone who rides with me. It's an 06 though.

Thanks guys, I got the parts for the TPS tester and put that together. The TPS was way out of adjustment(it was at 1.41 at idle). It seems to not have any drops when I tested it. It seems pretty smooth all the way through WOT. I set it according to the manual and got it back to together and it idles and goes into reverse, like it used to. I think the TPS has been off for a while because now the throttle response is right there and it seems to run better.

Thanks again for the help.

thats excellent JT..

seems like you built a pretty good tester..glad they could help you out..

have a good season now that baby is ripping..

Hey there, I have a 2005 900 RMK and it cuts out at idling and almost stops. Could this be the TPS as well or does it sound like the detonation sensor??? Anyone???

You will have to narrow it down a little more...Tps or throttle switches poss stator or temp probes,,,,! Is it spark, fuel or electrical?
When,where does it happen etc!?
