Default Knock sensor question

Everytime you hit the knock sensor does it do minor engine damage? Or does it retard timing/fuel before damage is done?

Damage done . Its like rain sensor, cant feel rain before its raining. but it helps to do less harm.

Ive hit it like 15 times. Dont think it depends on octane more likely overrev or too high afr . Knock can be very little damage to very much damage so it depends on situation
